Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line charts illustrate the variations of the eletronic appliances posession in the household and the time that has been spent for completion of the house work between 1920 and 2019. Electronic machines are washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner. While the housework is washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning.

Overall, the trend had been constantly rising during these 100 years and electric machines drastically became common to be used in each house. On the other hand, the house work hours had been consistently decreasing throughout these years.

To explain more, in 1920 people started to use all three machines to complete the basic house chores. Although washing machine was most used in the beginning among the 40% houses. Similarly, refrigerator was newly introduced in 1920 because it was at 0% but a drastic increase is pominent until 1940 and afterwards the usage kept increasing. A slight fall was in the use of washing machine after 1960 but then it slowly went higher.

Vacuum cleaner was at 30% in 1920 but in 2019 it had the highest percentage which was 100%.

Conversely, due to the increasing use of these machines, the per week hours of house work came down. In 1920 each household was spending 50 hours per week however, in 2019 these hours shrank to 10 per week only.

In conclusion, the use of machines became extremely popular from 1920 to onwards. Each machine were used by more and more people between 1920 and 2019. As a result, the number of hours decreased per week in each house.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both charts and give a clear overview of the opposing trends: appliance ownership generally rose, while housework time fell. You also select relevant details, including the washing-machine dip after 1960 and the vacuum cleaner’s rise to 100%. This supports a response that addresses the task well overall. However, some reporting is inaccurate or too general: the refrigerator was about 2%, not 0%, in 1920, and the washing machine was not the most widely owned appliance then (40% versus 30% for vacuum cleaners, though it was higher than the refrigerator). The overview also overstates a constant rise, since washing-machine ownership fell between 1960 and 1980 and refrigerator ownership levelled off at 100%. More precise comparisons across the years would strengthen the account.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details and a concluding statement. The contrast signalled by “On the other hand” and “Conversely” helps readers follow the main relationship between appliance ownership and housework time. At times, however, the progression is less controlled: the appliance details are not consistently organised by series or by period, and the final “In conclusion” repeats the overview rather than adding a useful comparison. Some links are also awkward, such as “Similarly” before the refrigerator detail, where the relationship is not clear. Grouping the appliance trends together and then describing the hours, with clearer links between comparisons, would make the organisation more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “drastic increase,” “slight fall,” “usage,” and “decreased,” and the reader can generally understand the trends you describe. There is some variety in how you refer to the data, but several word-choice and collocation problems make the writing less natural: “electronic machines” is imprecise for these appliances, “became common to be used” is awkward, and “hours shrank” is not a natural description of a figure. Spelling errors such as “eletronic,” “posession,” and “pominent” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise chart language and standard collocations, such as “ownership rose,” “reached 100%,” and “housework time fell.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast clause beginning “Although” and a cause-and-effect sentence beginning “As a result.” These structures show some range, and the main message remains understandable. However, control is uneven, particularly in longer sentences and in agreement and article use. For example, “Although washing machine was most used in the beginning among the 40% houses” is an incomplete construction, while “Each machine were used” has a subject–verb agreement error. “While the housework is…” is also a sentence fragment, and punctuation around “however” in “however, in 2019” needs attention. Use complete clauses and check singular/plural agreement and sentence boundaries.
