Student answer (Band 7.0)
The charts compare the proportion of ownership with three household appliances and number of hours spent on household chores in country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, percentage of households who owned the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner increased sharply over the period, whereras the figure for washing machine steadily increased despite some fluctuation throughout the period. In contrast, the number of hours per week spent on household chores gradually decreased over the period.
Regarding ownership, the figure for washing machine increased from approximately 40% in 1920 to around 70% in 1960, which then increased slightly to just 72% by 2019. Ownership of refrigerator surged from just 1% to reached a peak at around 100% by 2019. Likewise, the percentage of households who owned vacuum cleaner constituted around 30% in 1920, then after the figure climed to around 100% by 2019.
Turning to the number of hours, in 1920, 50 hours per week spent on a household chores, which dropped sharply to 20 hours in 1960. The figure continued to decrease. By 2019, household spent hardly 10 hours for housework.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You give a clear overview of the main patterns: refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner ownership rose substantially, while housework time fell. The response also includes relevant starting and ending figures, such as washing machines at about 40% and refrigerators rising from roughly 1% to full ownership. This supports a well-focused summary of the charts. However, some detail is over-generalised: the washing-machine line did not simply increase steadily, as it dipped from about 70% in 1960 to 65% in 1980 before rising again. The housework trend also levels off at around 15 hours between 1980 and 2000, a useful stage omitted from the account. Including these comparisons would make the coverage more precise and complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on appliance ownership, and a final paragraph on housework. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Regarding ownership,” “Likewise,” and “Turning to” help signal the movement between ideas, and the reader can follow the main trends without difficulty. To make the progression more fully developed, group and compare the appliance figures more explicitly—for example, show that refrigerators reached 100% before vacuum cleaners, while washing-machine ownership remained lower. The final paragraph could also connect the intermediate figures to the endpoint rather than relying on “The figure continued to decrease,” whose reference is somewhat broad.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of trend vocabulary, including “increased sharply,” “surged,” “dropped sharply,” and “gradually decreased,” which communicates the broad movements effectively. There are also attempts at more precise expressions such as “constituted” and “reached a peak,” although these are not always natural for describing ownership data. Some word-choice and spelling slips reduce precision, including “wh ereras” (intended as “whereas”), “climed,” and “hardly 10 hours”; the last phrase suggests barely enough time rather than an approximate figure. Aim for accurate, natural collocations such as “the proportion of households owning…” and “fell to approximately 11 hours.” This would retain your range while improving control and clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which then increased slightly” and a contrast structure beginning “whereas.” Most of the intended meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “in country” needs an article, and “Ownership of refrigerator surged from just 1% to reached a peak” combines incompatible verb forms; use “rose from about 1% to reach…” or “rose … and reached…”. In “50 hours per week spent on a household chores,” the sentence lacks a clear subject and has an article/plural mismatch. Also check agreement and articles in “household spent.” More consistently complete sentence structures and accurate verb patterns would strengthen the response.
