Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two line graphs illustrate electrical appliances alters in ownership and amount of time spent doing work in households in single country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, there are three lines in first graph which show electrical appliances increases at households with the passage of time and second graph gives information about number of hours of housework per week per household.

In 1920, there is no invention of refrigerator so it held in 0% but vacuum cleaner and washing machine at 30% and 40% resoectively. Furthermore, with the development of refrigirator it gradually rises from 0 to 100% from 1940 to 2019. But the washing machine have both pros and cons it climbs to 70% in 1960 and gradually falls below than 65% and again climbs to 75% and remain at point in 2019. Moreover, vacuum cleaner use rises year by year which reach to 100% from 2000 to 2019. Additionally, numbers of hours used in washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning describe below that 50 hours of housework per week in 1920 steadily decreases to 20 hours in 1960 and in 2019 there is sharp decrease in 2

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad contrast: appliance ownership generally increased, while weekly housework time declined. You also include several relevant figures, such as washing machines at 40% in 1920 and vacuum cleaners reaching 100% by 2000. However, some data are inaccurate: refrigerators were about 2% in 1920, not 0%, and reached 100% by 1980, rather than rising from 1940 to 2019. The washing-machine description is also unclear: it rose to about 70% in 1960, dipped to 65% in 1980, then increased. The housework account ends with an incomplete and incorrect figure (“a sharp decrease in 2”), omitting the final value of about 11 hours. Give a clearer overview and report the main trends accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, with an introduction, an overview and a body paragraph, and sequencing words such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover” and “Additionally” show attempts to connect information. However, the overview is vague and does not clearly compare the two graphs, while the body moves between appliance trends and housework without a clear organising pattern. Some linking expressions are used mechanically, and “describe below” does not clearly introduce the housework figures. The final sentence is unfinished, so the account does not reach a clear conclusion. Organise the details into a logical sequence—for example, discuss the three appliances together, then describe the decline in housework—and use concise links that clarify relationships rather than simply adding another point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “ownership,” “gradually,” “steadily decreases” and “per week,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, making parts of the report awkward: “electrical appliances alters in ownership,” “it held in 0%,” and “the washing machine have both pros and cons.” “Pros and cons” is not suitable for describing a trend, and “held” does not express the proportion of households owning an appliance. Spelling errors such as “resoectively” and “refrigirator” also reduce accuracy. Use precise chart language such as “the proportion of households with,” “rose to,” “fell slightly,” and “remained stable,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which reach to 100%” and a contrast introduced by “But.” However, errors are frequent, and some sentences are difficult to follow. For example, “The two line graphs illustrate electrical appliances alters in ownership” has an incorrect verb pattern, while “the washing machine have” shows faulty subject–verb agreement. Articles and sentence construction are also problematic in “there is no invention of refrigerator so it held in 0%.” The final sentence is incomplete, ending with “a sharp decrease in 2,” and tense use shifts between present and past when describing historical data. Practise complete past-tense sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check agreement, articles and punctuation in each sentence.
