Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people are of the opinion that phones or tablets are good options to see a film and hence, the cinemas are useless. Others feel that it's not an amazing experience to see films on phones or tablets. According to them, the cinema still remains the best place to see a movie and enjoy it. I believe the Cinematic experience can not be underestimated.

Firstly, it is important to note that, with the level of distractions we have today on our phones, it's almost impossible to see a movie without interruptions from social media which can cause us to loose focus.

The cinema is void of distractions.

Furthermore, The cinematic experience brings the story closer to us, the feeling one gets from having to sit in a cinema and see a movie is different from the one gotten from just sitting alone with one's phone. For example, I was in a Cinema 2 weeks ago, I felt strong emotions and the movie progressed, I was able to connect with the storyline. Additionally, I was able to make some friends, in fact at the end of the session, there was a short explanation into the life and times of the playwright and I had the opportunity to learn and ask questions.

Finally, the cinematic experience still remains the best because not only does the cinema bring you closer to the storyline, it also provides an atmosphere without distractions which of course is not guaranteed when we use our phones. I would prefer to go to the cinema than stay and see a movie on my phone, if for nothing at all, for the calm environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention distractions on phones and the social aspect of cinemas, the arguments could be extended further to reach a higher band. For instance, the point about the 'playwright' is a bit specific and slightly tangential to the general cinematic experience. The conclusion restates your position well, but the overall depth of the discussion is more characteristic of a Band 6.0, as some points are repetitive rather than fully explored.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to link your points. However, the use of these devices is sometimes a bit mechanical. Additionally, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow feels slightly disjointed in places due to the short, punchy sentence structure. Improving the variety of linking words would help elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, such as 'cinematic experience', 'distractions', and 'storyline'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'loose' instead of 'lose' and 'gotten' which is less formal. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing like 'see a movie' or 'cinematic experience' by using synonyms or paraphrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the movie progressed' (which should be 'as the movie progressed') and 'I would prefer to go to the cinema than stay' (which should be 'rather than staying'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are some run-on sentences and minor errors in verb tense consistency. The majority of your sentences are simple, and increasing the variety of complex grammatical structures would improve your score.
