Student answer (Band 8.0)

Some people believe that watching films on phones or tablets has made cinemas unnecessary. Others think that films can only be fully enjoyed in a cinema. This essay will discuss both views before giving my opinion. I believe that although watching movies on personal devices is convenient, cinemas still provide a better viewing experience.

On the one hand, many people prefer to watch films on their phones or tablets because it is more convenient and cheaper. They can watch movies anytime and anywhere without spending money on cinema tickets or transportation. In addition, online streaming services offer a wide variety of films, making it easy for people to choose what they want to watch. For example, busy workers can enjoy a movie at home after work without leaving the house.

On the other hand, many people believe that cinemas provide a much better experience. The large screen, high-quality sound, and comfortable seating make films more enjoyable. Watching a movie in a cinema also allows people to focus on the story without distractions such as phone calls or household noise. For instance, action and science-fiction movies often look more exciting on a big screen than on a small mobile device.

In my opinion, cinemas are still the best place to watch films, especially for new releases and movies with impressive visual effects. Although mobile devices are convenient, they cannot offer the same atmosphere and excitement as a cinema.

In conclusion, while watching films on phones or tablets is easy and affordable, I believe cinemas remain the best choice because they provide a more enjoyable and memorable experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, such as the mention of convenience for mobile viewing and the immersive quality of the cinema experience. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced examples or explore the counter-arguments with greater depth, as the current development is somewhat straightforward and predictable. However, the task is fully addressed with a clear, well-supported argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall flow. The structure is clear and consistent, though the use of cohesive devices is somewhat standard; incorporating a wider variety of linking phrases could enhance the sophistication of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses relevant terms like 'streaming services', 'visual effects', and 'immersive'. While the range is adequate, it is somewhat limited and lacks the more sophisticated, less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling, and the meaning is always clear. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more precise collocations and topic-specific vocabulary to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay demonstrates a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is accurate. The student successfully uses complex structures, such as 'Although mobile devices are convenient, they cannot offer...', which shows a good grasp of subordination. There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, the student could experiment with a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as passive voice or conditional structures, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
