Student answer (Band 7.0)

Many individuals often claimed that in the new technological era, movies can be seen on smartphones, so there is no more need to go to the theatre. While others think that in order to enjoy more, movies need to be seen on a big screen, I feel that with a large audience and loud atmosphere, we can enjoy it more in a cinema.

On the one hand, a group of people claimed that due to advancements in technology, we can easily watch movies on our phones and computers while sitting at home without spending a single penny. To explain it further, any new movie can be downloaded within seconds on our phones. Thus, it helps us to stop extra spending on watching movies in a cinema. Moreover, it is also a convenient option, as it allows us to watch as per our preferred time and availability.

On the other hand, certain individuals think that watching movies in a cinema is a fun and more enjoyable experience. To elaborate on it further, watching a film on a big screen with a large audience and a quality soundbar makes the movie more enjoyable. For instance, whenever any new movie releases in a theatre, I always go to watch it with my friends, as it makes a movie more interesting. Thus, some people prefer to go to a cinema.

In conclusion, although smartphones and tablets are convenient and the cheapest option to watch a film, watching it on a big screen with other people gives you an enjoyable experience and makes the movie more interesting.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly discuss both perspectives and provide a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the convenience of home viewing versus the immersive experience of the cinema. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the argument regarding cinema experience could be extended by discussing the social aspect or the technical superiority of cinema projection more deeply. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explored with more nuanced reasoning rather than repeating similar points about 'enjoyment' and 'interest'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'To explain it further', and 'Thus' to link ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between sentences can sometimes feel a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and use more sophisticated referencing to connect ideas across sentences, which would help the essay feel more cohesive and less like a list of points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'technological era', 'convenient option', and 'immersive experience' (implied). However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'enjoyable' and 'interesting'. There are also minor issues with collocation, such as 'stop extra spending' instead of 'avoid additional costs'. To improve, aim to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and synonyms to avoid repetition. Using more varied collocations related to film and media would also enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are consistent grammatical errors, such as tense inconsistencies ('Many individuals often claimed' instead of 'claim') and minor article usage errors. Some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for a wider variety of complex sentence forms, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, and ensure greater accuracy in verb tenses. Proofreading for subject-verb agreement would also help eliminate these persistent, minor errors.
