Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that movies are streaming on mobile phones and other screen gadgets nowadays, so there is no need to go to cinema halls, whereas some individuals believe that in order to enjoy a movie to the fullest, it should be watched in a theatre. I firmly agree with the former viewpoint has more beneficial options for individuals.

To begin with, watching movies on screen devices are more convenient and it saves individuals time and money. In today's era, every other person is busy either with office workload or with house chores and they do not have much time for things like booking expensive movie tickets and travelling for minutes to reach to a movie place. For instance, OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon prime provide unlimited shows and series in different genres and individuals can watch them anytime when they have leisure moment without paying again and again until they have subscriptions. Therefore, these benefits reflect that films can be enjoyed anywhere with the help of technology.

On the other hand, watching movies in theater have some advantages like better sound quality, bigger screens and a great idea to spend out weekends with loved ones. In other words, cinema halls have branded speakers throughout and a wall sized screen which enhance the experience and expectations of a person. For example, in Canada approximately 60 percent of youth spend their weekends while watching movies in theaters after working from home all week as this is the only chance they get to step out from their daily busy schedules.

In conclusion, I can reinstate that cinema might give better experience in watching a movie but in my opinion mobile phones are much convenient and helps to save resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. Ideas are generally well-developed, particularly the arguments regarding convenience and cost-effectiveness for mobile viewing. However, the counter-argument regarding the cinema experience could be further extended with more specific analysis of the 'social' or 'immersive' aspects beyond just mentioning sound and screen size. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, though the phrasing 'I can reinstate' is slightly awkward. Overall, the task is fulfilled adequately, meeting the requirements for a balanced discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'the former viewpoint has more beneficial options', which is grammatically disjointed. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'OTT platforms', 'genres', and 'subscriptions'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'movies are streaming' (should be 'movies are streamed') and 'spend out weekends' (should be 'spend weekends'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Improving the variety of verbs and adjectives would enhance the overall quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'watching movies... are more convenient' (should be 'is') and 'cinema halls have... a wall sized screen which enhance' (should be 'enhances'). Additionally, there are minor errors with prepositions and articles, such as 'reach to a movie place'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to subject-verb agreement and singular/plural consistency is needed.
