IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that now we can see films on our phones or tablets there is no need to go to the cinema. Others say that to be fully enjoyed, films need to be seen in a cinema.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It has been suggested by a few group of individuals that watching films on their own gadgets provide them numerous benefits, whereas, others contend the idea of going to a cinema for their entertainment. From my perspective, watching films on devices such as phones or tablets is a great way of entertainment due to the level of comfort and cost rather than travelling long distances to go a cinema.

Expressing my idea of enjoying movies at home, the major benefit people can get is the comfortable environment they can get according to desire. When they plan to see films on their phone or tablet they are not required to sit on their fixed seat as they can choose to sit in the living room or stay in bed. They are not required to get ready that they need to do for going out. Another benefit of watching films at home is that it is cost friendly as what they only need for watching a movie is the Internet. They can save money that they have to spend for their travel to cinema, buy movie tickets, and purchase refreshments. To illustrate this point, for watching movies on internet people do not need to pay anything as many broadcast websites such as Hotstar, Netflix, and Amazon Prime are either available for free or for very less subscription charges which is comparatively lower than ticket price of a cinema.

On the other side, those who prefer to enjoy films in a theatre believe that it has social benefits. By stepping out of home, they get several opportunities to meet people from different areas, know about their traditions or culture, understand the differences of their opinions. It not only helps them to broaden their knowledge but allows to make connections that they use for their career growth or business development. For example, young adults who are keen to meet visitors from different countries and looking to improve their communication skills prefer watching movies in a cineplex due to this advantage.

To conclude, although going out to see films is a great way to make new connections and get in touch with people for personal benefits, the advantages of watching movies at home provide more comfort and reduce financial stress of individuals.
