IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that now we can see films on our phones or tablets there is no need to go to the cinema. Others say that to be fully enjoyed, films need to be seen in a cinema.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Cinemas are the vital part of entertainment industry. Some people say that due to the advancement in modern technology people are no longer required to go to the cinema halls to entertain ourselves, whereas others feel movies should only be watched in movie hall for more fun. I partially agree with the given statements, as I feel their should be the balance of time and money people have.

To start with, there are multiple advantages one can count on finger tip about watching movies on phones or tablets. The first and foremost could be watching it at their own pace. To delineate, while watching a movie in cinema hall, people often find it difficult to match the pace with movie. In addition, especially if they are watching movie in another language which they might not be familiar with, they always have a chance to go back and forth if they may find difficulty in understanding something. The second would be cost saving. To elaborate, when people have a plan to go to cinema halls , they not only go to cinema hall, but also to restaurants, park or shopping malls. Thus, they may end up spending more than their pocket allows. Therefore, if people buy the membership of any online platform, it will cost cheaper, and they can watch movies multiple times.

On the other hand, there are also advantages of watching movies in theater. The first would be family time. To explain, in their busy life people may not often get free time. Thus, when they get it, and choose places to go they often decide going for movie. In addition with movie, people can spend quality time with family while traveling to theater or while enjoying food outside. The second advantage could be feel. So many people go to theaters just to get feel. To explain, when they watch movie, they are more focused, much involved in the movie, and sometimes they feel adrenaline when any action scene comes.

To wrap up, yes, it is a good idea to utilize the technology to entertain themselves. However, as far as my opinion is concerned people should go to theaters once in a while to get the real exposure of cinematic life.

Referencing is generally clear, though some sentence-level connections could be smoother to achieve a more natural flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'delineate' and 'adrenaline', though 'delineate' is used slightly awkwardly in this context. Some phrasing is repetitive or simplistic, such as 'get feel' or 'cost cheaper'. While communication is never impeded, the range is not yet broad or flexible enough to reach the higher bands. The student shows a good grasp of general vocabulary but needs more precision in collocations and idiomatic expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Cinemas are the vital part' (missing article), 'their should be' (incorrect pronoun), and 'it will cost cheaper' (incorrect comparative structure). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor issues with comma placement. While the errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement, article usage, and the correct formation of comparative structures.
