Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe watching movies on handheld devices has replaced the need to visit cinema. Whereas others believe, one should go to nearby cinema to enjoy it to the fullest. In my opinion, I believe watching movies and dramas at home is a comfort, but watching it on big screens makes a huge impact in the experience.

To begin with, watching movies on cellphones gives us comfort to watching it anywhere. For example, while travelling. But if we give it a thought, the experience is what we miss in that. As all the huge cinema halls are equipped with best quality screens as well as sound system which enhances the experience.

Moreover, watching film in the cinema it is a way of gathering which most of us lack of. Earlier families used to get together and watch movies, which builds bonds. which I believe cannot be achieved while watching it at home. To exemplify, back in time during my childhood me and my family had a rule to go to cinema and watch movies after every couple of weeks. I believe that has being a very important role in my life, as it has made so many memories and bond with my family.

Therefore to conclude, I believe even though if we cannot go to cinema to watch movies regularly, handheld devices could not replace the experience of the cinema halls. I recommend each and everyone to watch new movies in a good location where they can experience the effects of movie with their loved ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the convenience of mobile devices versus the immersive quality of cinema and the social aspect of movie-going. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'gathering' is a strong argument, but it could have been expanded further to explain why home-viewing fails to replicate this social dynamic beyond just mentioning 'bonds'. The conclusion is clear, but the overall development of ideas remains at a basic level, preventing a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore to conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and there are issues with sentence-level cohesion. For example, the sentence 'which builds bonds. which I believe cannot be achieved...' uses a sentence fragment starting with 'which', which disrupts the flow. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun usage in the second paragraph. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words would enhance the logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'equipped' and 'enhances', but the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'lack of' in the context of 'gathering which most of us lack of'. There are also minor errors in collocation, such as 'made so many memories and bond', which should be 'formed memories and bonds'. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's flow. Examples include 'watching movies on cellphones gives us comfort to watching it' (should be 'the comfort of watching'), 'that has being a very important role' (should be 'has played'), and 'even though if we cannot go' (should be 'even if we cannot'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of sentence fragments. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors limits the score to the 5.5–6.0 range.
