Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, watching films on mobile devices has become increasing common in modern society. However, some people believe that cinemas are the perfect place to enjoy movies. I firmly believe that cinemas are a better place to watch movies because they provide bigger screens and high-quality sound systems.

On the one hand, people who watch movies on their tablets and phones argue that these are more affordable option. Viewers can rent movies or buy video steaming subscriptions at affordable price. To explain further, viewers can pay once and watch movies multiple times. For example, some people love to watch same movies multiple times. If users rent movies or buy subscriptions for a month, they can watch movies multiple time within a month without paying extra cost. This shows that, affordability is a main reason why people are now watching movies on their tablets and phones.

On the other hand, some people still watch movies in cinemas because they offer a better quality of sound systems and bigger screens. To explain further, cinemas provide high quality of visuals on bigger screen which enhance the movie watching experience. Some movies have intense sound effects which generally compress on tablets and mobile devices. Therefore, viewers can feels those sound effects only in cinemas. For example, movies like Avengers has great visual effects and intense sound. The experience of watching this type of movies in cinema is way better then watching at home on electric devices. Therefore, people still prefer to watch movies in Cinema.

To conclude, although watching movie on tablets and phones are more affordable options, cinemas offer greater visual and better sound effects which enhance the movie watching experience. Therefore, I believe people should watch movie in cinemas.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. Ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the argument regarding affordability in the second paragraph is explained in a circular manner, and the points about cinema quality in the third paragraph could be more nuanced. While the ideas are supported with examples, such as the mention of 'Avengers', the depth of analysis is limited. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the implications of these views more thoroughly rather than restating the same points in different ways.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there is occasional repetition of phrases like 'To explain further' and 'Therefore', which makes the flow feel a bit predictable. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that ideas transition more smoothly between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'video streaming subscriptions' and 'intense sound effects'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing or minor errors, such as 'watching movie' (should be 'watching movies') and 'compress on tablets' (should be 'compressed'). The repetition of basic words like 'movies' and 'watch' throughout the text suggests a need for a wider range of synonyms and more precise collocations to demonstrate greater lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent minor grammatical errors. Examples include 'has become increasing common' (should be 'increasingly'), 'watch same movies' (should be 'watch the same movies'), and 'way better then' (should be 'than'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and pluralization, such as 'in cinema' (should be 'in the cinema'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage would be beneficial.
