Student answer (Band 6.5)

Watching movies is one of the most common leisure activities for individuals. It is believed that people can watch films on their electronic devices, such as smartphones or iPads instead of going to a multiplex. However, others argue that cineplexes offer a full enjoyment of movies. I will discuss both sides, and I agree with the former statement.

To begin with, if people prefer to see films on devices at home, they can save time and money. In other words, these days, a movie ticket price is significantly high as compared to a few years ago. Also, viewers purchase snacks while seeing a movie in the cinema. As a result, the overall expense does not easily fit in every family's budget. In addition, they have a busy schedule and choose this recreational activity which allows them to save their precious time. For example, people ought to sit on a couch and enjoy their favorite shows without getting stuck in heavy traffic while heading to the cinema.

On the contrary, cinema provides a unique experience, which might be missed when watching movies in mobile phone because it has a big screen, an excellent sound and visual quality. These combinations can make the environment more enjoyable. For instance, audiences enjoy 3D films with goggles, feeling a part of the movie and an excitement. This experience may not be felt while watching in a smaller platform. Hence, multiplexes offer not only a wonderful experience but also a break in daily routines.

In conclusion, although seeing films in cinemas creates an exciting moment, I opine that movies should be watched on mobile phones or tablets, so it can prevent from excessive expenses just for entertainment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cost-effectiveness of home viewing versus the immersive experience of the cinema. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'saving time' is mentioned but could be further extended with more specific examples of how modern life impacts leisure choices. The position is consistent throughout, though the conclusion could have been more nuanced to reflect the complexity of the debate rather than focusing solely on financial aspects.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In other words', 'On the contrary', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the link between the 'busy schedule' and the 'couch' example is a bit abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'multiplex', 'recreational activity', and 'visual quality'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'watching in a smaller platform' (should be 'on') and 'prevent from excessive expenses' (should be 'prevent excessive expenses'). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. The use of 'I opine' is a bit formal and slightly unnatural in this context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the meaning is never obscured by errors. However, there are recurring minor errors, such as 'a movie ticket price is significantly high' (should be 'the price of movie tickets is significantly higher') and 'watching movies in mobile phone' (should be 'on a mobile phone'). While complex structures are attempted, they are not always perfectly executed. The punctuation is generally accurate, but the overall range of grammatical structures could be more varied to demonstrate higher proficiency.
