Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited by significant language barriers. While the prompt asks for a discussion of both views, the arguments provided—such as 'time saving' for phones and 'comfortable sitting' for cinemas—are somewhat superficial and lack depth. The essay covers all parts of the task, but the lack of clarity in expression prevents the ideas from being fully developed or persuasive. To improve, focus on expanding your arguments with more specific examples and ensuring your position is consistently supported throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and a lack of cohesive devices. While some linking words like 'On the one hand' and 'In conclusion' are used, they are often followed by sentences that do not flow naturally from the previous point. Referencing is also unclear at times, such as in the opening paragraph where the connection between the ideas is difficult to follow. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, which hinders the overall flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary range is limited and often inaccurate, which frequently impedes communication. There are numerous spelling errors, such as 'cinems', 'saficiant', 'Comfutebule', and 'maltifarious', and word choice is often inappropriate, such as 'optimistic perspective' used to describe a preference for phones. The student struggles to use less common vocabulary correctly, often resulting in phrases that are difficult to interpret. To reach a higher band, you should focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that your spelling is accurate, as these errors currently distract the reader from your main points.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The essay relies on simple sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are almost always faulty. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, including subject-verb agreement ('there are many people use'), article usage, and sentence fragments. Punctuation is also problematic, with commas often used incorrectly or missing entirely. These persistent errors make the text difficult to read and understand. To improve, you must focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practicing the correct use of tenses and prepositions.
