Student answer (Band 7.5)
While some argue that as movies can be viewed on digital devices and movie theatres are unnecessary, others contend that they are imperative to cherish movies to the full extent. I believe both views are justified, although technology has equipped us watch films at our own leisure time, cinema gives an opportunity to acknowledge the art at a superior level.
Firstly, the supporters of cinema argue that it provides better sound and sight which presents the true art. This is because the huge screen and powerful speakers allow us to view the movie as the director wanted us to see. Secondly, there are no distractions which means that we can watch the movie from start to end without any interruption of phones or pausing. Lastly, going out to see the movie is itself an outing for the family, along with laughing and crying with a large crowd makes the emotions feel bigger.
On the contrary, the critics contend that watching movies at home provides complete control. It means that viewers can pause, rewind or adjust the volume as per their need. Moreover, it is way more convenient than going to theatres as one can avoid driving, traffic and parking. Furthermore, there are financial benefits, since one does not need to spend money on tickets and outside food if they are watching movies at home. To exemplify, one can watch a movie at home on laptop while eating favorite home food to avoid expensive theatre ticket and overpriced snacks at the Silvercity Cineplex.
To sum up, although visiting movie theatres provides a riveting experience to the viewers, the comfort and control they get if they watch the same at home cannot be overlooked. Therefore, in my opinion, both views are justified depending on the occasion and individual needs of the viewers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, such as the discussion on the 'social' aspect of cinema versus the 'convenience' of home viewing. The arguments are well-supported with examples, like the mention of avoiding traffic and the specific reference to Silvercity Cineplex. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced development of the 'artistic' argument, perhaps by discussing how the cinematic environment specifically enhances the director's vision beyond just 'sound and sight'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two viewpoints is handled well with the phrase 'On the contrary'. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'To sum up' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different arguments. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between ideas is clear throughout the text. The use of referencing is generally accurate, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the argument from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is sufficient and generally appropriate for the task. The student uses some good collocations and topic-specific language, such as 'imperative', 'riveting experience', and 'true art'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'equipped us watch' (should be 'equipped us to watch') and 'at our own leisure time' (which is slightly redundant). While the range is adequate, the essay would benefit from a slightly wider variety of sophisticated, less common lexical items to demonstrate more flexibility. However, the meaning is always clear, and the word choice is generally precise enough to convey the intended message effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, although there are a few minor slips, such as the missing 'to' in 'equipped us watch' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'the comfort and control they get if they watch the same at home'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentences are mostly error-free. The complexity of the structures is sufficient for a Band 7, as the student successfully employs subordinating conjunctions and relative clauses. To improve, the student should focus on eliminating these minor grammatical slips to increase the frequency of error-free sentences.
