Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent decades, the technological advancement has been increased beyond expectations. Where many people argue that we can watch movies at home in their personal phones or tablets where others believe that cinema places are meant to enjoy movies rather than watching in electronic devices at home. This essay will shed some light on both perspectives before providing my own opinion.

On the one hand, many people say that watching movies at home in phone, tablets and laptops brings numerous benefits to them. One major benefit is cost saving. To elaborate more, people who enjoy movie at home saves a lot of money on their travel expense and ticket price of each seat. For example, if one family of a six-member book a ticket for a movie they need to spend a lot of money whereas sitting at the couch watching movie all together in one smart TV is more enjoyable. They get the opportunity to share quality time all together and everyone can give their opinion about the story of the movie and predict what will happen next which people could not do freely in cinemas as other people can get disturbed.

On the other hand, many people believe that films are best enjoyed in a cinema environment. Because of big screen good sound system and high-quality resolution gives different and energetic experience. Watching a movie in cinema also allow audience to fully concentrate on movie without any distractions. Furthermore, the shared experience of watching a movie with others can make the experience more memorable and people also see the reactions of the other people, how they feel about movie. Which is difficult to experience in small screens.

In conclusion, watching films on mobile phones or laptops is convenient and flexible. Whereas cinemas offer more engaging and immersive experience. In my opinion the combination of both allows people to get entertain the way they want and enjoy films in ways that suits different situations and preferences.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the discussion on cost-saving and the immersive nature of cinema. However, some points could be extended further; for instance, the argument about 'disturbing others' in a cinema is a good observation, but the development of the 'shared experience' in the second body paragraph is slightly repetitive. The position is consistent throughout, and the essay maintains a clear focus on the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with cohesion, such as the sentence fragment 'Which is difficult to experience in small screens' at the end of the second body paragraph, which should have been linked to the previous sentence. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'technological advancement' and 'immersive experience'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'cinema places' instead of 'cinemas' or 'movie theaters', and 'get entertain' instead of 'be entertained'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score. A wider range of precise vocabulary would improve the overall quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the technological advancement has been increased' (passive voice misuse), 'in their personal phones' (preposition error), and 'if one family of a six-member book a ticket' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, there are some punctuation and phrasing issues, such as the sentence fragment mentioned in the coherence section. While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these errors suggests that the writer has not yet achieved full control over complex structures.
