Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent years, technological advancements have made it possible to watch films conveniently on phones or tablets. A substantial group of people appreciates this development. However, other individuals believe that films can only be worthwhile to watch in cinemas. This essay will discuss both viewpoints along with why I believe both experiences are beneficial on its own ways.

On the one hand, watching movies on personal devices undoubtedly gives a unique experience. It is convenient and affordable to watch recent releases at home without travelling to the cinema. One can save money on tickets, food or other amenities that cinemas offer. Moreover, pausing the movie for short breaks and reviewing the previous scenes is possible. It is convenient for working people with busy schedules. A person, for instance, can watch a movie in their private place with a meal or snacks of their choice. Additionally, they can choose the volume setting as per their preferences while sitting comfortably on their couch or bed.

On the other hand, cinemas are designed in a way that provides an extraordinary experience to the audience. One can enjoy quality time with their friends and family and express different emotions together. People can socialize by meeting people with similar interests in the same genres of movies and share their opinions and knowledge based on their point of view. Additionally, the powerful sound system, massive screen and carefully controlled lighting in the cinema hall are designed to engage the public to the storyline. For instance, 3D movies visualize special effects on big screen and can give a unique and truly immersive experience to the audience.

I believe that both approaches have their own merits. Watching a movie at home on phones or tablets can be convenient, affordable and provides a wide range of flexibility to adjust volume, screen time and repeat without spending extra money. Conversely, visiting cinemas to watch movies is a social activity and offers unique expressions of the movie with different visual effects and separate settings from distractions.

Overall, it could be a subjective matter how people enjoy watching films. Some prefer watching them on phones or tablets which can be accessible anywhere as per their comfort, whilst cinemas are built with specific settings for movies where people can become a part of the audience and enjoy different scenes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the convenience of home viewing and the immersive experience of cinemas. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the contrast between the flexibility of personal devices and the social/sensory benefits of the cinema. To reach a higher band, ensure your conclusion does more than just summarize; it should reinforce your opinion more decisively. The current conclusion is slightly repetitive of the body paragraphs rather than synthesizing your final stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'Conversely' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, though some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the structure is clear and supports the development of your argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with precision. Phrases like 'technological advancements', 'immersive experience', and 'subjective matter' are used correctly. There is an attempt to use less common items, which is successful. However, there are minor issues with collocation, such as 'on its own ways' (should be 'in its own way') and 'visualize special effects' (which is slightly awkward in this context). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is adequate and allows for clear communication throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'on its own ways' and 'as per their comfort', which do not impede meaning. You show a good grasp of complex structures, such as using 'while' clauses and conditional-like constructions. To improve, focus on refining subject-verb agreement and preposition usage to ensure the majority of your sentences are completely accurate.
