Student answer (Band 7.5)
Nowadays, people can easily watch films on their phones or tablets, so some believe that going to the cinema is no longer necessary. However, others argue that films are more enjoyable when they are watched in a cinema. This essay will discuss both views, and I believe that cinemas still provide a better experience for certain types of films.
On the one hand, watching films on a phone or tablet is convenient and affordable. People can watch a film whenever and wherever they want without travelling to a cinema. In addition, streaming services offer a wide range of films, often at a lower cost than buying cinema tickets. For example, after a long day at work or college, people can simply relax at home and watch a movie on their tablet without spending time travelling.
On the other hand, cinemas provide a much more enjoyable and immersive experience. They have large screens, powerful sound systems and comfortable seating, which allow viewers to become more involved in the story. This is especially important for action, science-fiction and adventure films because their special effects and sound are designed to be experienced on a large screen. Furthermore, going to the cinema is a social activity, as people can enjoy films with their friends or family.
In my opinion, although watching films on phones and tablets is more convenient, cinemas are still important because they offer a unique experience that cannot be completely replaced by small screens. I personally prefer going to the cinema for new blockbuster films, while I would choose to watch older or less exciting movies at home.
In conclusion, watching films on personal devices is convenient and inexpensive, whereas cinemas provide a more immersive and social experience. Therefore, I believe both options have advantages, but cinemas are still worthwhile for people who want to fully enjoy a film.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are well-developed, such as the contrast between the convenience of home viewing and the immersive nature of cinema. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific examples or delve deeper into the societal implications of the decline of cinemas, rather than focusing primarily on personal preference and convenience.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument. The flow is natural, and the relationship between the two viewpoints is clearly established.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses relevant terms like 'immersive experience', 'streaming services', and 'blockbuster films' accurately. While the range is adequate, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band. The word choice is precise enough to convey the intended meaning without any confusion, and there are no spelling errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Complex structures, such as 'although watching films on phones and tablets is more convenient, cinemas are still important', are handled well. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The writing is clear and easy to follow, indicating a high level of control over grammatical forms.
