Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is divided opinions on whether it make sense to watch movie in the theatre or not. While many believe that we should watch films on our devices, others believe that we can only enjoy it in a cinema. I believe we should watch in on phone. and TV as it is more convenient and affordable.

On one hand, many people are in the favour of watching movies on their devices instead of cinema halls. It is true that theatres are expensive and it is not possible to watch every movie in theatre. There are a lot of streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon prime which provides the same movie at a very cheap price. Another reason is that they can watch movie on their own time. Cinemas present movies on their own schedule, and one must reach their on time. I completely agree that watching it at home gives us a lot of flexibility and opportunity to watch more movies in the same price.

On the other hand, some argue that to get the best experience we should visit cinema. A lot of people watch movies for experience rather than movie script. It gives them different kind of happiness watching movie on a bigger screen and better sound quality. In addition to this, these people treat film as an outing opportunity. Since it is not possible to watch it with a large group of people at home, they prefer cinema halls.

In conclusion, although some believes that you can only enjoy movie on a bigger screen and sound system provided by cinemas, I believe that we should watch more movies on our own devices as it is less expensive and more flexible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cost-effectiveness and flexibility of home viewing versus the immersive experience of the cinema. However, the development is somewhat basic. For instance, the argument regarding 'movie script' versus 'experience' is a good point but could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the essay, which is a strength.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In addition to this' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel a bit repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, though the sentence structure within paragraphs could be more varied to improve the overall progression of ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'streaming platforms' and 'flexibility', but the range is somewhat limited. There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'in the favour of' (should be 'in favour of') and 'reach their on time' (should be 'reach there on time'). To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and a wider variety of topic-specific vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that, while they do not impede communication, are noticeable. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('There is divided opinions', 'some believes') and article usage ('watch movie', 'in theatre'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with sentence fragments like 'I believe we should watch in on phone. and TV'. Increasing the accuracy of basic grammar and refining the use of complex structures would significantly improve the score.
