IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that now we can see films on our phones or tablets there is no need to go to the cinema. Others say that to be fully enjoyed, films need to be seen in a cinema.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is an ongoing debate regarding whether watching films in our phones or tablets makes it unnecesary to go to the cinema. While others argue that to fully enjoy a film, it must be seen on a big screen. This essay will discuss both these views before explaining why I believe both ways are a source of entertainment and depend on the convenience of an individual.

On the one hand, nowadays, mobile phones and tablets are commonly used to watch movies and dramas on different social media platforms. These platforms are usually free like YouTube while some are paid like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Zee TV etc. Watching films on screens of mobile phones or tablets is convenient and easily accessible. People do not have to specially plan and dress up to watch a movie which will cost them money, time and effort.

On the other hand, watching a film in a cinema offers special visual and sound effects which give an amazing experience. Theatrical effects leave a lasting impact on the audience which cannot be experienced on the small screens. Moreover, many latest features like 3D-effects, ambience of the cinema hall along with comfortable chairs attract people to watch their favourite movies on big screens.

However, in my opinion, watching on small or big screens is subjective to personal circumstances, many of which cannot manage to spend money on such activities.

In conclusion, while both views hold merit, I personally believe that actual enjoyment can be anywhere you are happy and have good company. It can be watching a long-awaited movie on a big screen or any random movie on a Saturday night with your family.

The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text, contributing to a coherent overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'theatrical effects', 'ambience', and 'social media platforms'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'subjective to personal circumstances', where 'dependent on' would be more natural. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band score. The use of vocabulary is functional rather than sophisticated, but it does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'watching films in our phones' (should be 'on our phones') and 'unnecesary' (spelling error). The sentence 'While others argue that to fully enjoy a film, it must be seen on a big screen' is a sentence fragment as it lacks a main clause. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally correct. A wider variety of complex structures with fewer errors would be needed to reach a higher band.
