Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, the debate about whether films should be watched in cinemas or at convenience of our homes has increased. I personally believe that the experience of enjoying your favourite movie in a cinema is exceptional. In this essay, I will discuss both views in details.

The modern technology and devices has been a source of great convenience for mankind. Most of us have been able to access anything from the screen of our phones or tablets. Therefore, people who prefer convenience claim that they can enjoy the movies at home rather than going to a movie theatre. For instance, online platforms like Netflix has made movies accessible to everyone and they can enjoy it anywhere anytime. It allows them to prevent the hassle of planning a movie outing, finding the showtime and buying the tickets.

On the other hand, watching movies in the cinema is another whole experience. You need to plan the day with your friends which can be more enjoyable instead of watching alone at home. Moreover, the cinematic visuals on the big screen are vibrant. The spatial sound effects in the customized cinema room are worthy for opting the theatre instead of a mobile screen. The foremost experience of all the crowd cheers is the cheery on the top as well. In addition, the snacks especially the popcorn and drinks make the experience more pleasant.

In my opinion, movies must be enjoyed in a cinema. It truly enhances the movie experience and provides greater enjoyment than watching it alone at your home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the convenience of streaming services versus the social and sensory experience of a cinema. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about 'crowd cheers' is a bit brief and could have been expanded to better illustrate the unique atmosphere of a cinema. The essay covers all parts of the prompt, but the depth of analysis is more characteristic of a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level, as some arguments remain slightly superficial.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two perspectives. Cohesive devices such as 'In recent times', 'Therefore', 'On the other hand', and 'In addition' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the 'crowd cheers' and the rest of the paragraph is a bit abrupt.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'cinematic visuals', 'spatial sound effects', and 'modern technology'. However, there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'the cheery on the top' (which should be 'the cherry on top') and 'worthy for opting the theatre'. These minor errors in collocation and idiom usage suggest a Band 6 level. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring idiomatic expressions are used accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The modern technology and devices has been' should be 'have been') and incorrect preposition usage ('at convenience of our homes' should be 'at the convenience of our homes'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy in basic grammar rules would significantly improve your score.
