Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is believed that cinemas are the best places to watch movies; however, many people think that mobile phones or tablets are good alternatives to going to theatres. Although using mobile phones or other devices costs less, I believe that watching films in cinemas provides a better experience with fewer distractions.

From the former perspective, using technological devices such as phones, laptops, or tablets is a budget-friendly and convenient approach to watching movies because it only requires an internet connection. For example, people can watch films while travelling, late at night, or even during their free time. It is not only affordable but also saves the time spent travelling to cinemas and avoids long waiting times for tickets.

From the latter perspective, cinemas are the best option for watching movies because people can spend quality time with their families and friends. They can enjoy films on a huge screen without the unnecessary distractions. It is also a great way of socialising, as it allows people to meet others with similar interests. For instance, watching movies at theatres may give fans an opportunity to meet film stars during special screenings or events.

In conclusion, although watching movies on phones or other gadgets is a cheaper and more convenient option, I am in favour of later view, as i believe that going to cinemas is more beneficial. Cinemas provide an opportunity to spend quality time with friends and family, create unforgettable memories, and strengthen relationships.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both perspectives and provides a clear opinion. However, the essay falls short of the 250-word minimum requirement (243 words), which negatively impacts the development of ideas. While the arguments are relevant, they remain somewhat superficial. For instance, the point about meeting film stars at screenings is a bit unrealistic for the average cinema-goer. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations or concrete examples to ensure the response is fully developed and meets the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'From the former perspective', 'From the latter perspective', and 'In conclusion' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences within paragraphs is smoother by varying your linking words beyond standard signposting.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You use terms like 'budget-friendly', 'convenient', and 'socialising' correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited and lacks the 'less common' lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of sophistication. There is some repetition of basic words like 'watching' and 'movies'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and collocations related to the topic of entertainment and technology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and grammar errors are infrequent. There is a minor error in the conclusion ('in favour of later view' should be 'in favour of the latter view') and a capitalization error ('i believe'). While the control is good, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, aim to use a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or more sophisticated relative clauses, while maintaining your current level of accuracy.
