Student answer (Band 6.0)

With the advent of modern technology and internet connectivity, individuals can watch films on the go on their devices as well as in main cinema halls based on their personal discretion. While some film fanatics believes that cinema provide the ultimate environment to appreciate the story and characters on the big display screen. However, in my own opinion the choice is based on individual needs and budget considerations.

The proponent of cinema believes the big screen and audience provide the perfect setting to enjoy story telling as well as discuss the films/movies afterward. From my own experience, it provides a social setting as well as the option to enjoy food & beverages while watching movies. The post film discussion with friends/family also provides additional experience of discussing the best dialogues, key lessons and action sequences from the movie. This generally is missing when the movie/film is watched on devices. Further, normally at the start and end of the film the trailer of new production films to be screened also provide additional knowledge on key production to come to theatres, their timing and star casting.

Given the modern-day engagement and work schedule, it is impossible to go to cinemas on a regular basis. Thus, the option of watching movies on devices while commuting is a quick fix. Given the challenges of organizing the group viewing, purchasing tickets at specific timing and investing additional amount to transport and buy food/beverage are definitely additional cost. From my personal experience, if the movie is not a blockbuster or star-studded event, it is acceptable to consume the storytelling on devices on commute or in privacy of homes.

In my opinion, the determination of where and when to watch movies is now an individuals' discretion. As much as the cinema provide ideal setting, one must not deprive oneself from watching movies on devices if arranging such visit are logistical and budgetary challenges.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the social benefits of cinema versus the convenience of mobile devices. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about trailers providing information is a bit tangential and could have been better linked to the main argument. The position is consistent throughout, but the essay would benefit from more depth in the analysis of why some people feel cinema is 'essential' beyond just social aspects, such as the technical quality of sound and projection.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'While', 'However', 'Thus', and 'In my opinion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the use of 'this' in 'This generally is missing', which lacks a clear antecedent. Overall, the paragraphing is sufficient and contributes to a coherent flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'personal discretion', 'logistical and budgetary challenges', and 'star-studded event'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'consume the storytelling' and 'main cinema halls'. Additionally, there is some repetition of words like 'movies' and 'films'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and avoid repetitive phrasing to demonstrate greater flexibility and control over word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('some film fanatics believes', 'cinema provide') and punctuation errors (the sentence starting with 'However' is a fragment). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Greater attention to subject-verb agreement and sentence boundary control would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
