Student answer (Band 5.5)

There was a time when we used to wait for some movie to release in theatre and we will go watch the movie at big screen with focus and enjoy every dialogue and every scene.

In this era of modernisation and convenience, everyone has access to most advanced devices that enable us to access sources of entertainment at the comfort of our own house and therefore that craze for watching movie at theatres has deteroited.

Now-a-days, we have devices such as advanced smart phones, tablets, LED screens at home along with unlimited access to internet and platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Videos that makes it even more accessible to watch movie sitting at any corner of the house.

Both the models have their advantages and some disadvantages too. On one hand, it is good to have all convenience and comfort together at home and all family members can watch different movies as per their mood and choice on their own personal devices, at the same time, without spending any extra money. On the other hand, it is a big hit on the profits theatres make with viewers coming to watch movie. Their businesses are badly impacted because it's not a movie alone that earns them profit but the sale of edible items such as popcorns, beverages etc. add multifold to their profit margins.

There is another aspect to this, there are hardly any films releasing these days that capture the attention of viewers that they make efforts to walk upto cinema, therefore, there is a requirement for such good movies on unique concepts that viewers can think of watching at cinema. Unless film makers, work on this aspect, people are fine to save their efforts and stay home at the comfort and enjoy the limited entertainment on their own devices.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, though the opinion is somewhat implicit rather than clearly stated in the introduction or conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the convenience of home viewing versus the economic impact on cinemas. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about 'unique concepts' is a good start but could have been expanded with specific examples of films that justify a cinema visit. The response covers all parts of the prompt, but the depth of analysis is more characteristic of a Band 6.0, as some arguments remain slightly underdeveloped.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the shift in technology to the economic consequences. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'There is another aspect to this' or 'Both the models'. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved with more sophisticated linking words to create a smoother transition between the advantages of home viewing and the disadvantages for cinema owners.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'modernisation', 'deteroited' (spelling error: deteriorated), and 'multifold'. However, there are also instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'big hit on the profits' and 'walk upto cinema'. While the meaning is always clear, the range is somewhat limited, and the occasional spelling error and informal phrasing prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'we used to wait for some movie... and we will go watch' (tense inconsistency) and 'that makes it even more accessible to watch movie' (missing article). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and comma splices. While the errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest that the writer has not yet mastered complex structures, placing this in the Band 6.0 range.
