Student answer (Band 6.5)
wide angle screen
enjoy the movie without disturbance
It is often argued that nowadays people can watch movies on their phones or tablets without going to the theatre; however, others believe that they should visit the cinema for full enjoyment. I believe that it is depend upon the people's perception of how they prefer to watch movies.
On the one hand, proponents of using personal electronic devices to see films are cost-effective and convenient. To elaborate, people can watch movies whenever and wherever they want without having to travel to the cinema or pay for an expensive ticket. Apart from this, streaming services provide a wide variety of films that can be enjoyed according to viewers' preferences. In this contemporary era, individuals have busy schedules; therefore, it is convenient for them to watch movies whenever they have time. For example, working professionals have limited time to spend; therefore, they prefer to watch films on their laptops rather than travelling several hours to a theatre.
On the other hand, cinema provides an invaluable experience that can not be easily replaced. It has a wide-angle screen, high-quality sound and a comfortable environment, which can help to immerse the viewer in the story. For instance, watching a blockbuster movie in the cinema creates powerful sound effect with large screen can make people more excited than watching on phones.
In conclusion, although people can indeed conveniently utilize their free time and also save money as well, it is undeniable that a cinema can give a valuable experience. I believe that both options has its own advantages; the cinema remains the better choice for fully appreciating certain types of movies.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the mention of convenience for busy professionals and the immersive quality of cinema. However, the development could be more nuanced; for instance, the argument regarding the 'cost-effectiveness' of personal devices is a bit repetitive. The essay covers all parts of the prompt, but the conclusion could have been slightly more integrated with the main body points to fully justify the final stance. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Apart from this', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is mostly clear, though the connection between the opening sentence fragments and the rest of the text is slightly disjointed. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision, such as 'contemporary era', 'invaluable experience', and 'immerse the viewer'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'proponents of using personal electronic devices... are cost-effective', where the writer confuses the people with the devices themselves. Additionally, 'creates powerful sound effect with large screen' is slightly awkward. Despite these minor issues, the range of vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly and demonstrates an attempt to use more sophisticated language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'it is depend upon' (should be 'it depends upon') and 'both options has its own advantages' (should be 'both options have their own advantages'). There are also minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. The writer demonstrates a reasonable level of control over complex structures, though more consistent accuracy would be required for a higher band score.
