Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, people can easily watch films on their smartphones and tablets without having to visit a cinema. While others say that to be fully enjoyed, movies ned to be seen in cinema. This essay will discuss both the views before explaining why I believe that watching films in a cinema provides a more enjoyable and immersive experience.

To begin with, there is an array of advantages of watching films on phones and tablets. The most important one to be considered is that it is convenient to watch movies at any time and place without leaving home. People can watch during breaks at work or while travelling. Another crucial advantage is that watching movies on phones or tablets is cheaper than cinema tickets, especially for families with multiple children. Additionally, viewers can pause, rewind or stop whenever they want which gives them more control. For many busy people with limited time, this flexibility makes entertainment more accessible.

On the other hand, there are numerous advantages of watching movies in cinema. First of all, the most prevalent one is the quality of sound and picture. Cinema screens and audio systems are designed to create an immersive experience that small phone and tablet screens cannot match. Furthermore, the cinema environment encourages viewers to focus on film without household distractions. This concentration allows people to become fully absorbed in the story. Moreover, watching films in a cinema is a social experience where people can enjoy films with family and friends.

In my opinion, watching films in a cinema is a better experience. The large screen, excellent sound and comfortable environment make films more enjoyable and realistic. I believe cinemas provide a more exciting experience. To conclude, there are a lot of advantages of watching films on phones and tablets such as, convenience and lower costspilso they are also beneficial factors of watching movies in cinemas such as, quality of sound and picture and better environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and clearly stating a personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, such as the mention of convenience and cost for home viewing, and the immersive quality of the cinema experience. However, the conclusion is slightly repetitive and could have been more concise. The position is consistent throughout, and the arguments are well-supported with clear reasoning, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is well-organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is logical. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to link ideas. However, the final sentence of the conclusion is slightly clunky and contains a typographical error ('costspilso'), which slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the structure is coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some flexibility. Phrases like 'immersive experience', 'household distractions', and 'fully absorbed' demonstrate a good command of topic-specific language. There are some minor errors, such as 'ned' (need) and 'costspilso' (costs; also), which appear to be slips rather than a lack of range. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more sophisticated collocations and ensure proofreading to eliminate minor spelling errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, which aids readability. There are occasional minor grammatical slips, such as 'discuss both the views' (should be 'both views') and 'seen in cinema' (missing an article: 'a cinema'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the grammar does not impede communication. The control over punctuation and sentence structure is generally good, warranting a solid score in this criterion.
