Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is believed among some individuals that these days movies can be watched on electronic gadgets such as phones or tablets which eliminates the need of cinema. However, others believe, cinema is better place to see films to make it more fun and complete joy. In my opinion, films can be seen in theatres rather than electronic devices to make it more fun avtivity.

On the one hand, using electronic gadgets to watch movies is a cost-saving. It eradicates the need to visit a cinema. Consequently, it saves the transportation fares.

Secondly, it saves a lot of time of an individual which can be used in doing some other household activities. For example, people can come home from work and watch a movie with their family instead of going outside which makes them to spend a time with their family.

However, the main reason to go the cinema is the environment created in the theatres alure the individuals to fully focus on films on a big screen. Therefore, no outside disturbance can be helpful to understand the movie more efficiently. Secondly, in today's busy and sedentary lifestyle, the stress and other mental issues are in rise amongst the people. To overcome this issue, mostly youngsters get some quality to spend with their peers by planning to watch movies in such an environment. Additionally, some individuals eagerly wait for new movies and they are fascinated to know about the sequels. For example, superheroes movies such as spiderman, superman are released in series which generates interest among the viewers.

In conclusion, although it is cost-efficient and time saving to watch movies using electronic gadgets, I believe going to cinema is better option to get away from daily routine and to spend quality time with the friends.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as cost-saving for home viewing and the immersive environment of the cinema. However, some points are under-developed; for instance, the argument regarding 'mental issues' is a bit tangential and could have been more directly linked to the cinema experience. The position is consistent throughout, but the development of ideas could be more sophisticated to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is fulfilled adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs. Each paragraph has a central topic, and there is a progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, but there are minor issues with flow between sentences, such as in the second paragraph where the connection between saving time and household activities is slightly abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'cost-efficient', 'sedentary lifestyle', and 'sequels'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'complete joy' instead of 'enjoyment' and 'avtivity' (spelling error). The phrase 'mostly youngsters get some quality to spend' is also unnatural. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'cinema is better place' (missing article), 'makes them to spend' (incorrect verb pattern), and 'are in rise' (incorrect preposition). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are occasional slips. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. A wider variety of error-free complex structures would be needed to move into the 7.0+ range.
