Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is now possible to watch films on mobile devices such as phones and tablets anywhere and at any time. Some people argue that this means cinemas are no longer necessary, while others believe that the cinema experience cannot be replaced. This essay will discuss both views before reaching a conclusion.
On the one hand, watching films on personal devices offers clear advantages. The main one is convenience and cost. Streaming services like Netflix or Amazon Prime allow people to watch thousands of films for a small monthly fee, which is much cheaper than buying a cinema ticket, especially for a family. Furthermore, people can watch at a time that suits them, pause the film, and watch it from the comfort of their own home. For people living in rural areas or those with busy schedules and young children, this flexibility is extremely valuable. During the pandemic, for example, many people became accustomed to watching new releases at home and now prefer it.
On the other hand, supporters of the cinema argue that some films need to be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated. Cinemas provide superior picture quality, immersive surround sound, and a huge screen that a phone cannot match. This is particularly important for action, science-fiction or epic films where visual effects and sound are central to the experience. Secondly, the cinema is a social activity. Going to the cinema with friends or family, buying popcorn, and watching a film

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The essay addresses both sides of the argument and presents a clear topic. However, the response is incomplete as it ends abruptly mid-sentence in the final paragraph, and it fails to provide a concluding paragraph or a clear personal opinion as requested by the prompt. Furthermore, the response is under the 250-word minimum requirement. While the ideas presented in the body paragraphs are relevant and well-developed, the failure to finish the essay and the lack of a conclusion significantly impact the task response score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay uses logical paragraphing and clear cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. The progression of ideas is logical until the text cuts off. Because the essay is incomplete, the overall structure is compromised, preventing a sense of finality. However, the internal cohesion within the completed sections is effective and demonstrates a good grasp of linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and natural for the topic. Phrases such as 'immersive surround sound', 'visual effects', and 'flexibility is extremely valuable' show a good range. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling. While the range is sufficient for the task, it does not reach the level of 'less common' or 'sophisticated' lexical items required for higher bands, but it is accurate and clear throughout the text provided.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Grammatical control is strong, with no noticeable errors in the text provided. The use of complex sentences, such as 'For people living in rural areas or those with busy schedules and young children, this flexibility is extremely valuable', is handled well. The punctuation is accurate. The main limitation is the lack of a full range of complex structures due to the incomplete nature of the response.
