IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that now we can see films on our phones or tablets there is no need to go to the cinema. Others say that to be fully enjoyed, films need to be seen in a cinema.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

This is a common topic for debate all around the world with respect to the cinema. Many people think that there is no need to go to cinema as they can watch films on their devices, such as phones or tablets. On the other hand, there are some people who prefers to go to the cinema to enjoy the movies to the fullest. According to me, both the sides have valid reasons for their choices and I will try to explain them through the help of this essay.

To begin with, the working class and the professionals, who usually have a packed schedule, does not get enough time to go to the cinema. Gradually, they drift away from the cinema as it is a time-consuming activity. For example, if you plan to watch a movie in the cinema, you need to book the tickets, drive to the cinema theatre, and spend almost 5 hours, including the commute. On the contrary, you can find the movies available on the OTT platforms, which can be easily viewed on the handheld devices, such as phones or tablets. Thus, making the life easier for the working professionals. This is the main reason why they are losing interest in watching films in the cinema theatre.

However, there are others who love to watch every movies in the cinema theatre. According to them, watching movies in a bigger screen, make them feel the connection with the characters and live those moments. Consequently, they plan beforehand and book the tickets in advance, so that they must not miss neither their daily chores nor the movie.

I echo their feelings and believe that cinema has its own magic that can unravel different emotions out of you. I am a huge fan of the audio and visual effects of the cinema theatre. The Dolby sorround sound and the impeccable visuals has always left me awestruck. Moreover, it is a fun activity where you can indulge with your friends and families.

To conclude, people have their preferences to watch films on cinema or on their devices. I respect both. However, in my opinion, it is a great recreational activity to go to cinema theatre to watch films. It can also act as a stress buster.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'packed schedule', 'recreational activity', 'stress buster', and 'impeccable visuals', which show an awareness of style and collocation. However, there are a few minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'every movies' instead of 'every movie' or 'movies', and 'Dolby sorround sound' which contains a minor spelling slip.
