IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that now we can see films on our phones or tablets there is no need to go to the cinema. Others say that to be fully enjoyed, films need to be seen in a cinema.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Some people believe that the development of smartphones and tablets has made going to the cinema unnecessary, while others argue that films can only be fully enjoyed when watched on a cinema screen. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe that cinemas still offer a superior viewing experience.

On the one hand, watching films on smartphones and tablets is convenient and affordable. People can access a wide range of movies through streaming services without having to travel to a cinema. This is particularly beneficial for those with busy schedules, as they can watch a film whenever and wherever they want. In addition, watching a movie at home can be more comfortable because viewers can pause the film, choose their preferred seating position and avoid the high cost of cinema tickets, snacks, and transportation. Therefore, for many people, personal devices provide a practical alternative to visiting a cinema.

On the other hand, cinemas provide an atmosphere and level of immersion that portable devices cannot easily reproduce. A large screen, high-quality sound system and dark environment allow viewers to become more deeply engaged in the storyline. Moreover, watching a film in a cinema is often a social experience, as people can enjoy it with friends or family without the distractions commonly found at home. This is especially important for action, science-fiction and other visually spectacular films, which are designed to be experienced on a large screen.

In my opinion, although smartphones and tablets are excellent for convenience and everyday entertainment, cinemas remain the better option for fully enjoying a film. The combination of a large screen, powerful sound and immersive atmosphere makes the experience more memorable. Nevertheless, portable devices are likely to remain popular because they offer flexibility and accessibility.

In conclusion, while modern technology has made watching films at home easier and more convenient, I believe that cinemas continue to provide the most enjoyable and immersive experience, particularly for major film releases.
