Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, the trend of watching movies in phones or tablets is rapidly increased. Some people think that films can be seen in our phones or tablets irrespective of going to cinemas, while others believe that it can only be enjoyed by looking at a big screen in a cinema. This essay will discuss both sides of the issue before presenting why I believe that there is no need to go to the cinema for watching films.

On the one hand, some people argue that cinema is the best place to watch any movie. People prefer to see movie in a cinema because of the big screen. Although the cost of tickets is high, they enjoy the experience of watching films in a cinema. Moreover, most of the movies release in theatres first then come online in phones. For example, if any blockbuster movie is going to release then people book it in advance to see that movie in a cinema. Thus, films need to be seen in a cinema to be fully enjoyed.

On the other hand, others think and I believe that people can watch any movie in their phones. There is no need to spend extra money to watch a movie in a cinema which people can see at a lower cost in a phone. Although cinemas have big screens that people like to see, phones are the cheaper option to see the movies at home. For instance, young people prefer to watch movies in their mobiles so that they do not need to travel anywhere. Therefore, it is preferable to see movies in a phone or tablet to save money and travelling time.

In conclusion, although it is enjoyable to see films in a theatre, it can cost more than watching movies in the mobile phones. Phones or tablets provide comfort to people who do not want to travel to anywhere to see the film.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views (watching films on personal devices versus cinemas) and clearly stating your own position in the introduction and body paragraphs. Your main ideas, such as convenience and cost-saving for phones versus big screens and release timings for cinemas, are relevant. However, the development of these ideas tends to be repetitive, using similar points (cost and screens) across multiple paragraphs rather than extending them with deeper analysis or varied examples. For a higher band, the arguments could be more fully developed with distinct supporting details. Nevertheless, your position is clear throughout, earning a solid Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a brief conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, particularly the reliance on phrases like 'see movie' or 'see films' and repetitive structural patterns. Additionally, referencing could be smoother to avoid slight disjointedness between sentences. This represents a typical Band 6 performance for cohesion and logical sequencing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your ideas about watching films on phones, tablets, or in cinemas. Words like 'blockbuster', 'convenience', and 'alternative' are attempted, but the lexical range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are frequent repetitions of basic verbs and nouns, such as 'see movie', 'watch movies', and 'phones or tablets'. Furthermore, there is an awkward prepositional collocation in your opening sentence ('watching movies in phones or tablets'), which should be 'on phones or tablets'. Because the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey your meaning with some attempts at less common words, this corresponds to Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing subordinating conjunctions like 'although' and 'so that'. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text. For instance, the phrase 'trend of watching movies in phones or tablets is rapidly increased' contains a tense and preposition error (should be 'has rapidly increased' and 'on'). Other minor slips occur, such as 'most of the movies release in theatres first then come online in phones'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and simple sentences are generally accurate. This balance of mixed structures and manageable errors fits the Band 6.0 descriptors well.
