Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on whether cinemas are still necessary compared to viewing films on mobile devices, and the writer provides a clear opinion in the conclusion. Ideas are relevant and supported with explanations such as comfort, cost-effectiveness, and screen quality. However, some arguments remain somewhat generalized and under-developed, particularly in the conclusion where new ideas about spending time with friends and family are introduced rather than synthesizing the main points previously discussed. Overall, the task is fulfilled satisfactorily, placing this response at Band 6.0 according to the official descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, utilizing standard introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in awkward phrasing like 'Other arhue that' and abrupt shifts between sentences. Paragraphing is present and appropriate, but logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother and better linked to maintain a steady flow of ideas throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'cost-effective', 'detailed visual effects', and 'cinematography'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'arhue' instead of 'argue', 'plthora' instead of 'plethora', 'peolpe', 'saw it' instead of 'watched it', 'thrilled' instead of 'thrilling', and 'bid screen'. These lexical inaccuracies and occasional spelling mistakes reflect a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level, where communication is generally maintained despite errors in word formation and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses ('if they have busy schedule', 'which is free and cheaper'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors in tense consistency, articles, and preposition use, such as 'watching movies into cineplex', 'it create more focus', 'watching films at home have', and 'it is depend'. Punctuation errors also occur. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the grammar score from reaching a Band 6.5.
