Student answer (Band 6.5)

Entertainment plays a vital role in our lives. Movies are one type of refreshment activity that everyone loves to do. In recent years, immense growth in technology brought up entertainment industries on mobile phones and tablets. Some people say that since we can watch movies through online platforms, we do not need to go to the cinema while others say that watching movies in the theatre can be more enjoyable. From my perspective, watching movies at home is more comfortable, convenient and enjoyable. This essay will discuss both the sides in detail.

To begin, people who are in the favor of watching movies on cellphones have the following arguments. The first and foremost is cost effectiveness. Ticket prices for movies at the cinema halls are too high which could be a heavy burden for big families. They can have similar experience with one time subscription of online websites such as Netflix and YouTube at home. Furthermore, It is more convenient and comfortable. Individuals do not have to allocate specific time for movies as it has been seen that cinema halls are often crowded on weekends which could ruins someone's experience or day.

Conversely, people who are in favour of cinema have the following arguments. They say that experience at cinema is very different as they have installed sound effective speaker and comfortable seating arrangement. Additionally, it allows people to come together and have face-to-face discussion. It is more refreshing as people can make good memories by enjoying a small moments with their friends.

To sum up, although watching movies at the theatre is enjoyable, it can be exhausting as working hours in recent years have increased. It should not be forgotten that prices of tickets during peak time is very high which could add another financial burden to someone with base pay or ordinary people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—watching films on mobile devices versus visiting the cinema—and clearly states the writer's own position in the introduction. The ideas are generally relevant and extended, such as discussing cost effectiveness, subscription models, comfort, and social interaction. However, the development in places is slightly repetitive or limited, as seen in the conclusion where points regarding ticket prices and exhaustion are restated rather than synthesized. Nevertheless, the main requirements of the prompt are well-met, showing a clear stance and exploring both sides of the argument effectively. This corresponds well to a Band 6.5 descriptor, rounded to a Band 7.0 for addressing all task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction, the two body paragraphs exploring opposing views, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin', 'Furthermore', 'Conversely', and 'To sum up' are employed to guide the reader through the arguments, although some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition 'They say that experience at cinema is very different...' could be smoother. Paragraph internal cohesion is generally sound, ensuring that ideas flow logically from sentence to sentence. Overall, the organisational structure is clear and warrants a solid Band 6.5, placed at Band 6.0 due to some formulaic cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrasal structures such as 'cost effectiveness', 'subscription of online websites', and 'financial burden'. There are, however, some noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations throughout the text. For example, 'refreshment activity' is unnatural for hobbies or leisure, 'sound effective speaker' should be 'sound effects speakers' or 'sound systems', and 'ruins someone's experience' has a minor tense agreement error. Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding the reader's understanding, aligning comfortably with a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional ideas and relative clauses effectively, such as 'Some people say that since we can watch movies...'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses present, including 'immense growth in technology brought up' (article and tense choice issues), 'individuals do not have to allocate specific time for movies as it has been seen that cinema halls are often crowded' (run-on tendency), and 'enjoying a small moments' (plurality error). While these errors occur with some frequency, the majority of simple sentences are accurate and the complex structures attempted do not obscure the overall meaning, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.
