IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that now we can see films on our phones or tablets there is no need to go to the cinema. Others say that to be fully enjoyed, films need to be seen in a cinema.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that watching movies on phones and tablets is good source of entertainment, while others think that if they want to fully enjoy the movies, then they should go to cinemas. I will discuss both opinions in the upcoming paragraphs and also discuss my opinion.

To begin with, Movies are a source of entertainment. Everyone wants to watch a movie to feel enthusiastic. Watching a movie on a phone does not make feel happy. It is small screen and they are sitting and lying on the bed. They are just seeing a story, not enjoying it.

For example: Recently, research conducted by G.N.D.U Amritsar found that those who watch movies on a phone enjoy them less than those going to cinemas.

Secondly, they are just spending time watching something on their phones. There is no change in life while watching a movie.

On the other hand, if they go to the cinema to watch a movie, they see how people enjoy the story, and they also enjoy it more when watching with other people. They go outside, and the environment is completely different. They are not thinking about the work pressure and responsibilities. They are just watching a movie and enjoying their time. For Instance, research shows that 90% of workers like to go outside to watch movies.

In my Opinion, it is a better option to go to cinemas to watch movies. There is a big screen, and more people have a chance to watch it together and have more fun and enjoy it.

To conclude, watching movies is part of entertainment. Everyone has different opinions, but watching movies alone at home is not a good option compared to cinemas. Going to cinemas and watching on a big screen is outstanding.

For example, transition phrases like 'To begin with', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand' are utilized, but the internal connections between sentences can be abrupt. In the paragraph about mobile viewing, sentences like 'It is small screen and they are sitting and lying on the bed' lack smooth referencing and logical flow. Paragraphing and transitions establish a coherent structure overall, placing the response securely in the Band 6 category.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas about entertainment and cinemas. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'enthusiastic', 'environment', and 'responsibilities', but word choice and collocation are occasionally unnatural, such as 'does not make feel happy' and 'good source of entertainment' being a bit repetitive. Some basic spelling and word choice errors occur, but they do not impede communication. The lexical range is sufficient to meet the minimum standards of Band 6, showing adequate control of everyday vocabulary alongside some broader terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as 'Some people believe that watching movies on phones and tablets is good source of entertainment, while others think that if they want to fully enjoy the movies, then they should go to cinemas.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('is good source', 'It is small screen') and incorrect verb forms ('does not make feel happy'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, they rarely impede the overall communication of the message, matching the criteria for Band 5.5 to 6.0.
