Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, cinemas are getting replaced with phones, tablets and laptops. Some argues that we should watch movies on our electronic devices while others believe that we should go to cinemas to enjoy the movies. I will discuss both views and give my opinion in next paragraphs.

On the one hand, people have their personal electronic devices and they can watch whatever they want at any place. The first advantage of this approach is, it saves money. People don’t have to go to cinemas and buy tickets there. It also saves time and energy of an individual. For instance, Cinemas are usually at a distance from residential areas, it will take time to reach there and come back to home. Another advantage is that it provides convenience to a person. A person can watch anything whenever they want.

On the other hand, cinemas provide an atmosphere which creates a realistic experience. Sometimes, people forget their worries, existence of outer world, and others. They just enjoy the vibe that cinemas provide. For example, a movie is playing on the screen with some kind of comedy and then everyone laughs which creates an environment that people love and it is not possible on smartphones. The another advantage is picture and audio. A movie on a big screen with clear dialogues feels different to an individual and worth money that they spent.

In my opinion, when somebody has time and energy and wants to enjoy, they must watch a movie in theatres. But some people like their own company and don’t want to spend money, then they can watch it on their devices.

In conclusion, people have their own preferences for watching movies either in cinemas or their own devices. When people like the atmosphere and vibe, then its worth the money as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the convenience of watching films on personal devices versus the immersive experience of cinemas—and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and supported with explanations, such as mentioning the cost and time savings of staying home compared to the atmospheric benefits of a shared audience and large screen. However, some of the supporting ideas remain slightly generalised and could have been extended further to reach a higher band. For example, the point about sound and picture quality is introduced but lacks depth. Nevertheless, the task is properly fulfilled with a clear position maintained throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised into an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each view, a personal opinion, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as On the one hand and On the other hand, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as starting multiple sentences with 'A person' or 'Another advantage'. Referencing is generally clear, but overall progression could be smoother with more varied transitional phrases between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'immersive experience', 'residential areas', and 'preferences', though word choices are occasionally basic or slightly unnatural, such as 'existence of outer world' instead of 'the outside world'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. To improve, the student should incorporate a wider range of precise academic collocations and less common lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text. For instance, there is a subject-verb agreement error in the introduction ('Some argues' instead of 'Some argue'), and missing articles or awkward phrasing in places, such as 'come back to home' instead of 'come back home' and 'The another advantage' instead of 'Another advantage'. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, and the sentence structures remain reasonably varied.
