IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that now we can see films on our phones or tablets there is no need to go to the cinema. Others say that to be fully enjoyed, films need to be seen in a cinema.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today,s rapidly changing world, the mindsets of seeing films on our phones or tablets rather than cinema is booming up but the big-screen craving still captures people heart to watch movies in cinema.

Firstly, in this modern world, everyone has the internet on their TVs, smartphones, and tablets. With this, the subscription plans on these devices enhance the demand of watching new streaming movies at home. People prefer comfort now more than hustle. It gives flexibility to them for seeing any new movie at anytime with proper comfort.

Secondly, some are passionate about the big screen. They feels that the vibe of the cinema is so vibrant and different than seeing movies at home on TVs. The actions and scenes of the movies look more realistic in the movie theatre. For the instances, "The Avengers: Endgame" movie is streaming only for this month in theatres and it's re-released, but tickets are sold out because people love to see this action movie on big screen with full enthusiasm as they are seeing first time. In contrast, some say that it just the waste of money because it can be seen on TVs later.

Furthermore, it depends on a person's mentality and how they prefer to watch. Sometimes, the family people love to watch films with their children, but they are chaotic in theatre so they prefer to watch at home. Moreover, the few couples love to watch romantic movies on cineplex.

To conclude, we have a lot of options for everything; people are more choosy and wants to do things according to their state of ease.

Overall, the organizational framework is visible and allows the reader to follow the main arguments, satisfying the criteria for Band 6.

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'booming up', 'vibrant', 'enthusiasm', and 'mentality'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'seeing films on our phones or tablets rather than cinema' instead of 'going to the cinema', 'people heart' instead of 'people's hearts', and 'state of ease' instead of 'convenience'. Word formation errors, such as 'choosy' and 'wants' (disagreement with plural subject 'people'), also occur. While communication is not impeded, these frequent minor errors and unnatural collocations limit the score to a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional-like structures.
