IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that now we can see films on our phones or tablets there is no need to go to the cinema. Others say that to be fully enjoyed, films need to be seen in a cinema.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, individuals can easily watch films on smartphones and tablets, leading some to believe that cinemas are no longer necessary. However, others argue that films are more enjoyable when they are watched in a cinema. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe cinemas still provide a better overall experience.

On the one hand, watching films on mobile devices is convenient and affordable. People can watch a movie whenever and wherever they want without travelling to cinema. In addition, streaming services offer a wide range of films, often at a lower cost than a cinema tickets. This is particularly useful for a people with a busy lifestyle or those who prefer watching films alone. For instance, students can watch films on tablet after taking a break from studying.

On the other hand, cinemas provide a most immersive experience. Large screens, high quality sounds and comfortable seating allow people to more involve in the story. Moreover, cinemas provide a social experience because people like to spend their time with family and friends without any kind of distraction at home. For instance, action and science-fiction films are often more exciting on a large screen because their special effects and sounds are much more effective.

In my opinion, mobile devices are convenient and suitable for everyday entertainment, cinemas are still important to fully enjoying certain films. The combination of large screen, powerful sound and a shared atmosphere makes the cinema experience difficult reproduce at home. Therefore, both options have their advantages, but cinemas remain valuable for people seeking a memorable film experience.
