IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that now we can see films on our phones or tablets there is no need to go to the cinema. Others say that to be fully enjoyed, films need to be seen in a cinema.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
A number of people believe that there is no need to visit the cinema to watch films because they can now be viewed on mobile phones and tablets. However, others argue that films need to be watched in a cinema in order to be fully enjoyed. Both views have their own merits. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining my own opinion.
Firstly, watching films on mobile devices is a convenient way to enjoy entertainment. In other words, people can watch films at any time and from almost anywhere according to their convenience. For example, many people have very busy schedules, so they usually prefer to watch films at home when they have some free time. In addition, watching films at home provides greater comfort and privacy. For instance, people can watch a film in their bedroom or living room without having to sit next to strangers, which allows them to relax and enjoy their leisure time more comfortably.
On the other hand, many people prefer to visit the cinema because they want to experience films in a more immersive environment. Cinemas provide high-quality sound, impressive visual effects and a large screen, which can make the overall experience more enjoyable. For example, many young people prefer going to the cinema because they find the atmosphere exciting and engaging. Moreover, people who want to have a day out with their families may choose to visit a cinema because it gives them an opportunity to spend quality time together outside the home. Similarly, people who work from home may enjoy going to the cinema as a way of getting out of the house and relaxing.
In conclusion, both watching films at home and going to the cinema have their own advantages. In my view, although watching films on mobile devices is more convenient, I personally prefer going to the cinema because the large screen, high-quality sound and overall atmosphere provide a more enjoyable and immersive experience.

Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is managed appropriately, and referencing throughout the text is generally clear and easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary that allows for flexibility and precision, such as 'immersive environment', 'visual effects', and 'leisure time'. There are appropriate attempts at less common lexical items related to the topic of entertainment and lifestyle. While the vocabulary is generally natural and communicates the intended meaning without difficulty, it occasionally leans towards standard or repetitive phrases like 'watch films' rather than showcasing a wider variety of sophisticated synonyms. Spelling and word choice are accurate throughout, supporting a solid Band 7 rating.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a good variety of complex structures, such as concessive clauses ('Although watching films on mobile devices is more convenient...') and relative clauses ('...people who work from home may enjoy...').
