Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that Viewers prefer watching films online remotely at their convenience, whereas others still find amusement in watching movies traditionally in a cinema hall. I believe both views have their own merits.

Watching movies in a cinema hall has its own emotions that can be understood only by the viewers. Some would argue that cinemas feel much more alive on a multiplex screen. For instance, the character descriptions, story plot, and the music allow people to experience a change in emotions, which gets the public hooked on the story. Subsequently, it is often seen that the audience imitates the events in scenes, which makes it clear that watching movies on a larger screen gives you the feeling of events occurring in real life.

However, the revolution in technology has allowed people to watch any movie or film on a device the size of their hand. Therefore, people would rather stay at home comfortably instead of travelling a distance to watch a movie. Additionally, people find spending money on films at the cinema hall is rather expensive since they can search for any movies online for free. For example, there are many online websites where users can find movies without having to be charged.

In a nutshell, going to the cinema to watch a movie and watching films on onue electronic device have their own merits. However, I prefer watching movies onlline at home for my convenience because planning for the cinema hall can sometimes be time-consuming, while watching movies at home is more of a relaxed moment with loved ones in your free time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—watching films in a cinema and viewing them on digital devices—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. For instance, the discussion on cinemas mentions that 'character descriptions, story plot, and the music allow people to experience a change in emotions', but this point remains somewhat under-developed and lacks specific elaboration. Similarly, the arguments for home viewing are relevant but rely on generalized points about convenience and free websites rather than fully extended examples. To reach a higher level, the ideas would need to be more thoroughly explored and supported with deeper insights.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the two body paragraphs discussing opposing views, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'However', and 'Additionally' are employed to connect sentences and paragraphs, though referencing is occasionally mechanical. For example, transitioning between ideas could be smoother to avoid a formulaic feel. To move towards a higher band, the use of referencing and substitution could be more fluid and less repetitive to ensure cohesion is entirely natural and unobtrusive throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating the main ideas. There are clear attempts to use less common items and phrases, such as 'multiplex screen', 'convenience', and 'time-consuming'. However, occasional word-choice and spelling errors occur, such as 'onue' instead of 'our' and 'onlline' instead of 'online', along with minor phrasing awkwardness like 'watching films on onue electronic device'. While these lexical slips do not impede overall communication, they restrict the response from achieving a higher band. Incorporating more precise collocations and ensuring greater accuracy in spelling and word formation would enhance this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard structures such as conditional and relative clauses ('whereas others still find amusement', 'where users can find movies'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as capitalization issues ('Viewers') and minor prepositional or article slips, but these errors occur infrequently and rarely impede communication. The control over sentence structure is solid for this level. To achieve a higher band, the writer would need to incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated complex structures with a higher frequency of error-free sentences.
