Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on watching films at home versus in the cinema, and includes a concluding personal opinion. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed, lacking detailed elaboration or fully supported examples. Furthermore, the response falls short of the required minimum length of 250 words, containing only 230 words. This minimal development and incomplete length prevent the essay from reaching higher bands, as points such as financial barriers or industry impacts are only superficially mentioned without adequate explanation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation with attempts at paragraphing, but the essay lacks a clear overall progression. The use of cohesive devices is frequently mechanical, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as 'In the first hand' and 'however' appearing disjointed. Referencing within and between sentences is not always clear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical flow of arguments smoothly. To improve, the writer needs to employ a wider and more accurate range of linking words and ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common terms, such as 'hussle' and 'financial support', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling (e.g. 'phone and table' instead of 'phones and tablets', 'convinient'). These lexical inaccuracies occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. A higher band would require a broader range of vocabulary, precise word choices, and correct word forms used naturally throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, articles, plurals, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns, such as 'that you did nee to go at mall' and 'this people are ussually have not trouble'. These frequent errors place a strain on the reader and can cause comprehension difficulties. To progress, the writer needs to improve basic sentence construction, ensure subject-verb agreement, and gain better control over tense consistency and punctuation.
