Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, people have different opinions about watching films. Some prefer watching them on phones and tablets, while others prefer experiencing them in theatres. In my opinion, although watching films at home can be a fun experience, watching them in a cinema with a large screen is much more enjoyable.

To begin with, watching films on a phone or tablet provides comfort and a cozy environment. You can watch them by yourself without worrying about uncomfortable seating. You do not have to pay extra for food, as you can easily eat at home. You can also replay a film as many times as you want if you wish to record some scenes that you missed at the beginning. For example, you can easily watch a film while travelling or when you simply want to relax in the middle of the night.

On the other hand, watching films in cinemas provides a thrilling experience because of the bigger screen, which we cannot get on phones and tablets. The high quality picture and sound help us to become more engaged and focused on the film. The dark and comfortable environment also creates more excitement and allows us to concentrate on the movie. For example, science fiction and action movies are much more enjoyable when watched on a large screen compared to a tablet or phone.

In my opinion, I prefer watching films in cinemas rather than on phones or tablets. Modern theatres often have recliner seats and 3D effects, which provide a more realistic experience. Although watching films on tablets is affordable and comfortable, bigger screens provide a much more thrilling experience, especially for action and science fiction movies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—watching films on mobile devices versus going to the cinema—and clearly states a personal position throughout. Ideas are extended and supported well, such as when contrasting the comfort and flexibility of home viewing with the immersive audio-visual experience of theatres. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or lean heavier on personal preference without deeper external examples, which keeps the response at this level. To reach a higher band, the writer would need to fully develop every aspect of the discussion with deeper extension and more nuanced analysis rather than relying on standard talking points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introduction to the first view, the second view, and finally the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, with transition phrases like 'To begin with,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In my opinion' guiding the reader clearly through the argument. Paragraphing is managed sufficiently. To achieve a higher level, the use of cohesion could become even more seamless and less dependent on formulaic transitional markers, allowing the logical relationships between ideas to flow with greater subtlety and sophistication.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision, employing appropriate less common items such as 'cozy environment,' 'thrilling experience,' and 'recliner seats.' There is an adequate awareness of style and collocation suitable for a general discussion. However, occasional minor slips in word choice or repetitive phrasing prevent a higher rating. To push into higher bands, the student should integrate more sophisticated lexical chunks and precise idiomatic language or varied synonyms to describe the cinematic experience without reusing terms like 'enjoyable' or 'experience' multiple times.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The essay displays a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, yielding frequent error-free sentences. The writer demonstrates good overall control of grammar and punctuation, successfully handling conditional or subordinate clauses such as 'Although watching films on tablets is affordable...' and 'You can also replay a film as many times as you want if you wish to record some scenes...'. A few minor errors persist, but grammar and punctuation do not impede communication. To move up further, the writer would need to maintain an even higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate greater mastery over advanced syntactic structures.
