Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on whether films should be watched at home on mobile devices or in cinemas, and includes a clear position in favour of home viewing. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed. For instance, the mention of the YouTuber 'triggered insaan' provides a specific personal example, but it lacks sufficient expansion to fully support the argument. Similarly, the points regarding saving money and strengthening family bonds are stated rather than thoroughly explored. To move to a higher band, the writer would need to extend and support all main ideas with more detailed explanations and relevant elaborations throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, a clear personal stance, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, such as discussing home viewing in one paragraph and cinema experiences in another. However, referencing and cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or faulty. Phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' are used to structure the text, but internal transitions within paragraphs can be repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'Because' to start sentences in the third and fourth paragraphs. Improving the logical flow between sentences and varying cohesive ties would enhance the overall progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, but the range is limited. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'significant role', 'electronic appliances', and 'perspective', but these are accompanied by noticeable word choice and word formation errors, such as 'movies can be watch', 'fully enjoyed', and 'person's prescriptive'. While communication is generally maintained, these lexical inaccuracies prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To improve, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary, pay closer attention to word forms and collocations, and ensure that words are used with appropriate precision for the context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple constructions, with attempts at complex structures often resulting in faulty grammar. There are frequent errors in verb forms, voice, and agreement, such as 'films must watch in a theatres' instead of the passive voice, and 'we can strong our bond' where an adjective is used instead of a verb. Punctuation and basic sentence boundaries also show instability, with fragments like 'Because we have electronic appliances...' appearing frequently. To reach the next level, the writer must demonstrate better control over a wider variety of sentence patterns and significantly reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors.
