Student answer (Band 7.0)
There is ongoing debate around the world about how people should watch movies. Some people believe that films can easliy be watched on phones, tablets and computers, while other argue that people need to go to cinemas to fully enjoy movies. This essay will discuss both views and give my opinion.
On the one side, watching films on a phone is really convenient for modern people. They can watch movies whenever and wherever they want without going to cinema. In addtion to it, it can be cheaper beacuse the subscription of any channel could be cheaper to watch multiple movies for month than going to cinamas. Moreover, people can choose movies online according to their interest or genre. Finally, watching movies at home can be comfortable beacause people can pause the films, adust the volume, eat their own food and avoid the crowded places. Therefore, watching films on their personal device can be practical option.
On the other hand, going to the cinema provides experience that cannot be recreated completed at home. Cinemas have large screen, high quality sound system and comfortable seating, which can make films much more immersive. Some movies like action ,science-fiction and visually spectacular movies , are designed for big screen. Furthermore, going to cinemas is a social activity. Friends and family can spend time together, share their reactions and enjoy the atmosphere of watching a movie with other people.
In my opinion , although phoens and tablets are excellent for convenience and everyday entertainment , cinemas provide a more enjoyable experience when watching major films.
In conclusion, watching films on personal devices is convenient, affordable and flexible, whereas cinemas provide a more immersive and social experience. Therefore, although modern technology has reduced the need to visit cinemas, it has not completely replaced them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses both views and gives a clear, consistent opinion: personal devices are convenient, while cinemas offer a more enjoyable experience for major films. Relevant reasons support each side, including flexible viewing, subscription costs, the cinema’s large screen and sound, and the social atmosphere. The examples are appropriate, and the conclusion reinforces the comparison. This fits a response that covers the task and extends its ideas. To strengthen the development further, explain one or two points in more depth rather than relying mainly on lists—for example, clarify why a cinema’s sound and screen make a particular type of film more engaging, or illustrate the social benefit with a specific experience. Some claims, such as subscriptions being cheaper, could also be qualified because costs vary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The essay is clearly organised into an introduction, a paragraph for each view, an opinion, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposting such as “On the one side,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the structure explicit. Within paragraphs, ideas generally build logically, with “Moreover” and “Furthermore” introducing additional support. This is a strong, controlled organisation. To make cohesion more natural and flexible, reduce reliance on formulaic transitions and connect some points through their meaning instead. For instance, the convenience and comfort points could be linked as aspects of flexible home viewing, while the cinema’s technical and social benefits could be contrasted more directly. The separate opinion paragraph is clear, though it could be integrated into the discussion or developed with a supporting reason.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for discussing the topic, and there are useful choices such as “immersive,” “subscription,” “visually spectacular,” and “atmosphere.” The writer also uses relevant topic language, including “large screen” and “high quality sound system,” so the meaning remains clear throughout. However, some spelling errors and imprecise or repetitive expressions limit the range and control: examples include “easliy,” “cinamas,” and “fully enjoy movies.” A few collocations could be more natural, such as “subscription of any channel” and “for month.” Aim to check spelling carefully and choose more precise phrases, while varying repeated uses of “watching films” and “movies.” This would make the vocabulary more flexible and accurate without changing the clear overall message.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a clear contrast clause in “although phones and tablets are excellent for convenience … cinemas provide a more enjoyable experience.” Most sentences communicate their meaning successfully, and the essay uses structures such as “without going to cinema” and “because people can pause the films.” Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain, however. Articles are missing in phrases such as “go to cinema,” “provides experience,” and “can be practical option”; there are also agreement and plural issues in “while other argue” and “Cinemas have large screen.” Commas and spacing around punctuation are inconsistent. To improve, check articles, singular/plural agreement, and sentence punctuation systematically, while continuing to use a range of sentence structures.
