Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is irrefutable that technology is ubiquitous, and the use of technology is increasing day by day, either for personal or work purposes. Although many people advise watching movies on mobiles or tablets instead of going to the theatre, others prefer to watch movies in the cinema to be fully entertained. I agree with the former view, and I will discuss both viewpoints and give my view in the following paragraphs.

The first and foremost reason behind the first notion is that it not only saves money, but also saves time. To explain this, watching a movie in the theatre is more costly than watching movies on mobile phones, and it takes half a day, which can be used for important work. Secondly, one subscription can be used, and the whole family can watch movies. Netflix is an example which is used for a family pack, and within one subscription, 2 or 3 people can log in and enjoy movies, series and cartoons. Therefore, I agree with this notion that movies should be seen on mobiles or Tablets.

Paradoxically, there are multifarious reasons why others think watching movies in the theatre is more entertaining than watching on mobiles. Firstly, Mobiles can disrupt the entertainment when someone calls. Secondly, Screens are bigger than mobiles or tablets, which gives a realistic view. Last but not least, the voice quality is better, and nobody will be disturbed during movie time.

To conclude, although there are advantages of watching movies in the cinema, like better sound quality and a big screen, others and I agree with watching movies at home because it is still costly for the whole family to watch movies in the cinema.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a consistent preference for watching films at home, supported by relevant points about cost, convenience, interruptions, screen size and sound. The family subscription example also helps make your first argument concrete. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the case for home viewing receives more explanation, while the cinema advantages are mostly listed rather than explored. The claim that a cinema visit “takes half a day” could be qualified or supported, and the conclusion repeats the cost point without adding much to your reasoning. To strengthen the response, explain more fully why the cinema experience may be worth the extra expense, then make your comparison and final position more decisive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “To conclude” help readers track the argument. This gives the essay a coherent progression, though some linking is mechanical and the repeated “first” and “second” lists make the body paragraphs feel more like points than a developed discussion. “Paradoxically” does not clearly express the relationship between the two viewpoints, and “this notion” is a slightly vague reference. Use more natural transitions that show contrast or cause, and connect each supporting detail explicitly to the paragraph’s main claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “ubiquitous,” “subscription,” “disrupt,” and “realistic view.” These choices allow you to discuss convenience and the cinema experience clearly, and meaning remains accessible throughout. There are also some awkward or imprecise collocations: “advise watching movies” is not the intended meaning of people expressing a preference, “fully entertained” is less natural than describing enjoyment, and “a realistic view” does not precisely convey the immersive effect of a large screen. “Multifarious” and “Paradoxically” sound overly formal or do not fit their context. Aim for natural, precise phrasing rather than adding conspicuously advanced words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the opening “Although” clause and the “not only…but also” construction. Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the paragraphing helps contain the effect of some errors. However, there are occasional issues with articles, agreement and sentence construction. For example, “watching a movie in the theatre is more costly than watching movies on mobile phones” shifts from singular to plural, while “one subscription can be used, and the whole family can watch movies” joins ideas in a slightly awkward way. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “Tablets,” “Mobiles” and “Screens.” Check consistency in number and use of articles, and proofread sentence boundaries and capital letters to improve control.
