Student answer (Band 6.5)
Some believe that movies can only be truly experienced by going to the theaters while others prefer the comfort of watching films on their own devices. While going out for movies is great, in my opinion, watching them online is more enjoyable.
On one hand, some big budget films are produced to be seen on the big screen. As an example, Christopher Nolan's movies, shot on special cameras can only be enjoyed with cinemas with special equipment. A large screen and amazing sound system brings out the intricacies of film making that a few keen members of the audience really appreciates. Moreover, theatres also provide accompaniments such as popcorns which are loved by many.
On the other hand, movie-nights at home is a completely different experience. Firstly, it is much more afforable. This allows people to watch their favourive movies almost every weekend. Furthermore, in contrast to theaters with only a select list of movies, streaming services provide access to a larger catelogue. This allows people to watch movies released at any period of time, even before coloured televisions were invented. Additionally, in recent times, people like to consume content in a cozy setting. And what could provide more comfort that ones own home? That being said, sofas in living rooms are more ergonomic than the narrow seats that many theatres offer.
In conclusion, although watching films on the bigger screen provide more depth and quality, I feel that the convenience and variety offered by online alternatives unmatched. Watching movies at home is not only a great way to save money, but it also is more relaxing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses both views and gives a clear opinion: the introduction favours watching films online, and the conclusion restates that convenience and variety make home viewing preferable. The cinema argument is supported with the example of Christopher Nolan’s films and the benefits of a large screen and sound system; the home-viewing case includes affordability, catalogue choice and comfort. These relevant points are extended, although some support remains general—for example, the claim that streaming lets people watch films from any period is not illustrated with a specific example, and popcorn is a relatively minor reason for cinema attendance. Developing the comparisons with more precise evidence and explaining why the advantages matter would make the discussion more fully convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear, effective structure: an introduction states the position, two body paragraphs present the opposing views, and a conclusion summarises the preference for home viewing. Progression within the paragraphs is generally logical, and signposts such as “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. Linking expressions including “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “Additionally” are used flexibly, though the accumulation of these markers can sometimes make the writing feel a little formulaic. The sentence beginning “And what could provide more comfort…” is also somewhat detached from the surrounding explanation. Smoother links between related points and clearer integration of that rhetorical question would strengthen the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for discussing cinema and home viewing, with useful topic-specific phrases such as “big budget films,” “special equipment,” “streaming services,” and “ergonomic.” There is some variety in how the advantages are expressed, and the meaning remains clear throughout. However, several word-choice, collocation and spelling slips limit precision: “enjoyed with cinemas” is an awkward combination, “a larger catelogue” contains a spelling error, and “more afforable” and “favourive” are misspelled. “Popcorns” is also less natural than the uncountable “popcorn.” Aim to check spelling carefully and learn common word partnerships, especially when describing where films are watched and what services offer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concessive opening (“While going out for movies is great…”) and longer sentences explaining the benefits of streaming. Most ideas are easy to understand, and the paragraphing supports the argument. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement and sentence construction: “A large screen and amazing sound system brings” should use a plural verb, while “movie-nights at home is” has a plural subject with a singular verb. In the conclusion, “watching films on the bigger screen provide” also needs singular agreement, and “the convenience and variety offered by online alternatives unmatched” is missing a verb. More consistent subject–verb agreement and complete clauses would improve accuracy while preserving the range of structures already attempted.
