Student answer (Band 7.0)

While it is argued by some that there is no longer a need to visit cinemas, as people can easily watch movies on their phone or tablet screens, others opine that cinemas are crucial to make a movie more enjoyable. Although movies can be conveniently seen on personal devices, I believe that these devices are unable to provide same experience that people can obtain in movie theatres.

Advocates of the view argue that cineplexes are no longer required as phones and tablets are much better to watch any film. This is because unlike cinemas, people can watch any movie at any time by sitting at their couches, and they can control the sound, pause the videos as well as skip some boring scenes whenever they want. Individuals can also do some household chores while watching movies, for example cooking, cleaning and laundry, which is not possible if they visit the movie houses.

On the other hand, opponents maintain that film theatres can provide spectators with a memorable experience, which cannot be achieved by watching movies on phones or tablets. The primary rationale is that in cineplexes individuals can not only watch movies at a high picture and sound quality, but they can also get an opportunity to be socialized with others. They can get a fresh escape for a while from their daily responsibilities, and can also spend quality time with their loved ones.

In my opinion, people should definitely go to film theatres if they really want to enjoy any movie, and they can finish it just in few hours, while on phones they might have to postpone it for later due to any kind of disturbance. Besides the entertainment, cinema is also an integral part of any economy as it provides a number of jobs to many people and creates the great revneue for a country by captivating so many visitors.

To conclude, although some individuals find movie theatres unnecessary due to the invention of phones and tablets, it is my firm belief that cineplexes are important to provide people with a unique experience, entertainment, and also help to boost the growth of any economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both views and gives a clear, consistent opinion: personal devices offer convenience, but cinemas provide a more enjoyable experience. The supporting points are relevant, including flexible viewing and the ability to pause or skip scenes, contrasted with cinema’s picture and sound quality and social experience. The final paragraph adds an economic argument, but this point is introduced late and is not developed with an example or explanation of how cinema attendance benefits the economy. Some claims, such as phones being “much better to watch any film,” are also broad. To strengthen the response, explain the economic point more fully and support general claims with a specific example while keeping the focus on the question of enjoyment and necessity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear four-part structure: introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Ideas progress logically, and signposting such as “On the other hand,” “In my opinion,” and “To conclude” helps readers follow the argument. Within paragraphs, supporting details generally connect to the main point—for example, pausing and skipping scenes illustrate the convenience of personal devices. Some linking is more formulaic than flexible, and the economic argument appears abruptly in the opinion paragraph after the discussion of finishing a film. A clearer transition or a separate, better-integrated explanation would improve the flow. Overall, organisation is clear and progression is maintained, with some room to make connections less predictable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The response uses a sufficient range of topic vocabulary, including “personal devices,” “picture and sound quality,” “daily responsibilities,” and “memorable experience.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “cineplexes” and “integral part,” showing some flexibility. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “phones and tablets are much better to watch any film,” “get a fresh escape,” and “creates the great revneue” do not collocate naturally, and “revneue” is misspelled. Repeated use of “movie,” “cinema,” and “people” also limits precision. To move further, prioritise natural collocations and accurate word forms over unusual synonyms, and proofread spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

There is a good variety of sentence forms, including a concessive opening (“Although movies can be conveniently seen…”), relative clauses, and complex sentences explaining reasons. Many sentences are controlled and easy to understand. A few grammatical errors persist, however: “provide same experience” needs an article (“the same experience”), “can not only watch … but they can also get” has an awkward parallel structure, and “finish it for later” is expressed with an incorrect pattern in “postpone it for later.” The phrase “if they really want to enjoy any movie” also uses an overly broad determiner in context. Review articles, parallel constructions, and verb patterns; these corrections would make the otherwise varied grammar more consistently accurate.
