Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, with the rise in usage of smartphones and tablets, a considerable of individuals opt for doing the activities on their gadgets. Previously, people used to watch movies in the cinema but now they prefer

their phones, tablets or laptops to watch a movie. Before stating my opinion, this essay will analyze whether people will watch movies on electronic gadgets or the cinema will still relevant.

Nowadays, a substantial number of individuals, mostly young generation, prefer to use their smartphones or tablets for entertainments such as watching a movie, listening to the music or podcast. They believe that it is convenient for them to use electronic gadgets to fulfill their entertainment requirements. However, there are a number of OTT platforms, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, OSN, Disney+, that offer a variety of genre with a very low subscription price. Moreover, a person can watch anything whenever and however he wants to watch. For instance, my friend is accustomed to watch every movie in the cinema but now with the easy access to entertainment on smartphones or tablets through OTT platforms, she stopped watching movies in the cinema.

On the other hand, another group of people believe that no thing can replace the charm of watching a film in the cinema. They still manage to watch first day first show in the cinema. In their views, if a person needs to enjoy a film that he must watch it on the big screen. However, another underlying reason is that many people like to watch a movie with their loved ones; so, it is beneficial for them to take our time from their busy schedule and spend some quality time with their friends and family.

From my perspective, there must be a balance, not every movie is worthwatching in the cinema. However, we should not deny that some movies are only enjoyed on the big screen in the cinema. Therefore, it is recommended that a person should take out some time for himself and go out with the friends or family to watch a movie and spend a quality time with them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and give a clear personal position: you explain the convenience and choice offered by streaming services, then contrast this with the cinema’s large screen and social experience. The example of your friend makes the first view more concrete, and your conclusion supports a balanced approach. This meets the task well, though the two sides are not developed equally: the cinema argument relies mainly on the big screen and spending time with others, without explaining what features of particular films make cinema viewing especially enjoyable. Your opinion that some films suit the cinema better could also be supported with a specific example. More balanced development and fuller support would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to the two contrasting views and then your opinion. Paragraphing helps the reader follow this progression, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “From my perspective” make the main shifts clear. Some linking is mechanical or imprecise, however. The opening promises to “analyze whether” people will use devices or cinemas, which does not clearly preview the discussion, and repeated transitions such as “However” do not always express a genuine contrast. In the cinema paragraph, the move from the big screen to spending time with loved ones could be connected more explicitly. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions so the relationships between ideas are clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “OTT platforms,” “easy access to entertainment,” “big screen,” and “quality time.” These help communicate the main ideas, and the response shows some willingness to use less common vocabulary. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “a considerable of individuals,” “for entertainments,” “a variety of genre,” and “worthwatching.” “No thing can replace the charm” is also less natural than a more direct expression. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and fluency. Aim to learn vocabulary in common word partnerships, check singular and plural forms, and choose natural expressions rather than translating ideas word for word.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, using structures such as “Although” is not present, but you do use clauses with “that,” “if,” and “whenever,” as well as a contrastive sentence beginning “However.” The overall meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “a person can watch anything whenever and however he wants to watch” has an awkward repeated verb construction, while “if a person needs to enjoy a film that he must watch it” has faulty clause structure. There are also errors in agreement and articles, as in “a variety of genre” and “in their views.” Work on forming conditional and relative clauses accurately, and proofread for sentence boundaries and agreement. Greater control of these structures would improve accuracy.
