Student answer (Band 7.0)

With the advancement of technology, watching movies on different platforms have become a subject of considerable debate. While some people believe that since films can now be watched on mobile phones and tablets, going to the cinema is no longer necessary, others argue that watching films in a cinema is essential to fully appreciate and enjoy the movie. Although both perspectives have their own merits, I believe that watching movies on mobile phones and tablet is a more practical option, as it allows people to enjoy movies at their convenience while avoiding the additional expenses associated with visiting cinemas.

On the one hand, watching films on mobile devices offers a great flexibility. People can watch and enjoy films whenever and wherever they want at their own convenience, without travelling to cinema or following a fixed schedule. This is especially beneficial for those with busy lifestyle. watching movies at home are generally cheaper because people can save money on tickets, transportations, and refreshments. For example, a family can watch a movie on a streaming service without paying additional expenses for several cinema tickets.

On the other hand, cinemas offers an immersive viewing experience. Their large screens and high quality sound system allow audiences to appreciate visual details and special effects more effectively. Additionally, watching movies in a darkened theatre helps viewers concentrate more on storyline. Sharing this experience with friends and family make this outing more enjoyable. For example, actions movies often seem impressive in cinemas because of its effects and powerful sounds.

In conclusion, although cinemas offer a superior viewing experience, I believe mobile devices are more practical for everyday entertainment because they are convenient and affordable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion: mobile devices are more practical because they are convenient and affordable. The supporting points are relevant, including flexible viewing, savings for families, and cinemas’ large screens and sound. The examples help illustrate each side, so the response is developed rather than merely listing opinions. However, some claims remain broad—for instance, that home viewing is cheaper and that action films are more impressive in cinemas—and could be explained with a more specific consequence or personal example. Your position is consistent, but a little more development of why convenience outweighs the cinema experience would make the argument more fully persuasive and complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear, effective structure: an introduction presents the debate and your position, two body paragraphs discuss the opposing views, and the conclusion restates your preference. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the organisation explicit. Examples are placed appropriately after the relevant reasons. To make the flow more polished, use linking and reference more flexibly rather than relying mainly on standard paragraph openers. Also ensure each sentence begins clearly: “watching movies at home” starts with a lowercase letter after a full stop, which interrupts the otherwise controlled presentation. Overall, the ideas are logically sequenced and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “considerable debate,” “additional expenses,” “immersive viewing experience,” and “visual details.” These choices communicate the contrast between convenience and cinema quality effectively, and the meaning remains clear. Some collocations and forms are less natural, however: “a great flexibility” would be more idiomatic as “great flexibility,” while “high quality sound system” needs a more natural phrasing such as “high-quality sound systems.” There is also repetition of “watching movies” and “enjoy,” and “actions movies” is an inaccurate word form. This fits a response with adequate range and some attempts at less common vocabulary, but with occasional word-choice and collocation inaccuracies. Aim for more precise, natural combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession clause (“Although both perspectives have their own merits”) and a relative clause (“because they are convenient and affordable”). Most sentences are understandable, and errors do not obstruct the argument. Some agreement and article/plural errors remain: “watching movies … have become” should be “has become”; “cinemas offers” should be “cinemas offer”; and “Sharing this experience … make” should be “makes.” Other examples include “watching movies at home are” and “because of its effects,” where the subject or pronoun does not agree with the intended meaning. Greater consistency with singular and plural subjects, alongside careful proofreading, would improve accuracy while preserving your range of sentence forms.
