Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Jack,

I got your letter and I am glad to know that you are in my town. Since you are looking for a job, there is an opening for a Batch Supervisor in Nirma manufacturers inc and fortunately, my childhood friend is working for this company!

This position is full time and permanent in the company. However, there will different shifts based on how busy the production line is. Your role will be to supervise the ongoing production during your shift, and reporting and resolving any difficulties as and when it arises. Moreover, you need to provide the production report at the end of your shift to your line manager.

I believe this is a good role for you to start your career as you have bachelors degree in industrial engineering. There will be a lot of learning opportunities as you will be directly working on production line and supervise the work. This will definitely be the stepping stone towards your long term future role as a production engineer.

For this role, you can directly apply on their website by filling all the details. Don't forget to attach your latest updated resume and a cover letter. Also you can add my friend's name and e-mail address in the referral section. This will increase your chances for getting a call for interview.

I hope this will help you and let me know if you are interested in applying.

Best wishes,

Pratik

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly describe the Batch Supervisor role, explain why it is suitable for your friend given his industrial engineering background, and provide a logical process for applying. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the letter flows logically from the introduction to the conclusion. You have successfully covered all requirements of the task, ensuring the reader has all the necessary information to act on your suggestion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is well-organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Also' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is logical, moving from the job description to the suitability of the role and finally the application process. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the letter maintains a consistent flow from start to finish. The structure is coherent and supports the overall message well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'production line', 'stepping stone', and 'referral section'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'reporting and resolving any difficulties as and when it arises' (should be 'arise' to agree with 'difficulties') and 'bachelors degree' (should be 'bachelor's degree'). However, these do not impede communication. You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision, and the tone remains natural and conversational throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'there will different shifts' (missing 'be') and 'chances for getting' (should be 'chances of getting'). Additionally, 'reporting and resolving' is slightly awkward in the context of the sentence structure. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. Your control over punctuation is generally good, and the errors present are non-systematic and do not interfere with the reader's understanding.
