Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Joshua,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to let you know that I found the perfect job which will really fit according to your personality.

First of all, thank you so much for all the guidance and support you gave me during my struggling days while I was living in Canada. The other day I was out with my friends chilling and while I was coming back to my home the posters on the wall to my attention which was regarding Supervisor Position in the cafe. I instantly thought of you as you match the perfect experience for this job.

Since you were Supervisor at the Tim Horton's. The name itself is a big brand and managing everything was a great task that you fulfilled. The biggest advantage is that the restaurant is transit friendly. Moreover, Its safe too as it is in the heart of the city so nothing to worry about.

Therefore, it would be great if you will visit the restaurant by yourself and meet the hiring Manager in person. I already handed over your resume to the staff and they passed it further to the hiring department. Make sure to keep your phone always by your side just in case if they place the interview the call.

I hope this information is helpful. Looking forward to hear from you.

Best Wishes,

Ridhima

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the job, explaining why it is suitable, and providing application instructions. The tone is appropriate for a friend, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the connection between the friend's past experience at Tim Horton's and the current supervisor vacancy. The response is fully on-topic and provides a coherent narrative that satisfies the requirements of a General Training Task 1 letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' are used to link sentences and ideas effectively. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, the overall flow is smooth and the message is easy to follow. Referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in sentence connectivity could elevate the score further.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and conveys the intended meaning clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'match the perfect experience' and 'place the interview the call'. However, the student uses a range of functional vocabulary related to employment, such as 'hiring manager', 'supervisor position', and 'resume'. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more precise collocations and avoid minor word-choice errors that occasionally distract from the professional tone of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'posters on the wall to my attention' (missing verb), 'Its safe too' (missing apostrophe), and 'if they place the interview the call' (awkward phrasing). Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the reader can easily understand the instructions provided. The student shows an attempt at complex structures, but greater attention to subject-verb agreement and punctuation would improve the accuracy of the writing.
