Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear John,

How have you been these days? It's been long since we had a proper conversation. Today, I'm writing because I wanted to give you some suggestions that might be helpful in your job hunting process.

First of all, I have one job in my mind that might be perfect for you and that's administrative assitance position in one of the best company in my town. As per the title, you can guess that it is an office job which pays you $20 per hour. All the clerical duties such as organizing, reporting, keeping records are the part of the job duties.

The reason why I think this is a suitable for is because you already have 4 years of experience as an administrative assistant in your home country. Moreover, this is a automobile manufacturing company, where you always had a great interest in. Hence, you could also enjoy the fairshare of discount while purchasing your first car here in Canada.

In order to apply for this job, you only need to go the company website and apply it online. Isn't it really simple and easy? I hope you get this job and can't wait more to see you soon.

Take care,

Amy

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the administrative assistant role, explained why your friend's background makes them a strong candidate, and provided instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the nature of the job and the logic behind your recommendation. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the company culture or specific application deadlines to further extend your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding remark. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', and 'Hence' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or referencing techniques. Overall, the structure is clear and the progression of information is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'clerical duties', 'administrative assistant', and 'manufacturing'. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is somewhat limited in terms of sophistication. There are a few minor errors in word choice, such as 'administrative assitance' (spelling) and 'one of the best company' (should be plural 'companies'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The current level is sufficient to convey your message clearly without any misunderstanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'this is a suitable for is' (missing noun/incorrect structure) and 'go the company website' (missing preposition 'to'). Additionally, 'can't wait more to see you' is slightly unnatural; 'can't wait to see you' would be better. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Increasing your control over articles and prepositions will help you achieve a higher score.
